Shipping surcharges: the fees that sit on top of the rate

A shipping surcharge is any charge a carrier adds to the base transportation rate, and on a US domestic parcel they fall into eight families: address type, destination ZIP, fuel, awkward packaging, oversize, beyond-limits, bad addresses and seasonal demand. Freight shippers call the same thing accessorial charges.

UPS amounts from the 2026 UPS Rate and Service Guide, Daily Rates, updated July 7, 2026. FedEx amounts from the 2026 surcharge and fee schedule effective Jan. 5, 2026, and the weekly fuel page. USPS amounts from Notice 123, prices effective July 12, 2026. All three read on 2026-07-28.

Freight people call these accessorial charges, and on a truckload bill of lading they cover liftgates, inside delivery and detention. On a parcel the vocabulary survives but the list shrinks to the eight rows above. Everything a domestic parcel can pick up sits somewhere in that grid.

Worked example: the same weight, three boxes

Surcharges are easiest to see when you hold the contents still and change the container. We quoted these three cartons from Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303 through the calculator and left the results alone.

CartonActual weightVolumeUPS GroundCheapest of five rates
20 x 16 x 12 in25 lb3,840 cu in$29.52$28.77
30 x 20 x 20 in25 lb12,000 cu in$77.56$77.56
40 x 24 x 24 in20 lb23,040 cu in$203.72$203.72

The first carton is ordinary. The second crosses the UPS additional handling cubic-size line at 10,368 inches and picks up a 40 lb minimum billable weight. The third crosses the large package line at 130 inches of length and girth, which replaces additional handling with a much larger flat charge and a 90 lb minimum, even though it holds five pounds less than the second. Nothing about the contents changed.

Prices: SMKlog live rates. The 20 x 16 x 12 in carton comes from our July small-business parcel set; the other two were quoted for this page on 2026-07-28.

And the same box, four destinations

Distance does its own work. This is a 12 x 10 x 6 in box at 5 lb, quoted from Newark on 2026-07-28 to four cities.

DestinationCheapest rateFastest ground option quoted
Hoboken, NJ 07030$10.371 business day on UPS Ground at $11.24
Atlanta, GA 30303$13.522 to 3 business days on UPS Ground at $14.05
Denver, CO 80202$16.476 to 7 business days on UPS Ground at $17.00
Seattle, WA 98101$19.147 to 8 business days on UPS Ground at $19.30

Newark to Seattle nearly doubles the Hoboken price. Compare that with the box experiment above, where staying inside one metro but growing the carton took $29.52 to $203.72. Size beats distance, and it is not close.

Who these pages are usually written for

Search this subject and you land on parcel audit consultancies selling invoice recovery to companies with contracts, or on carrier rate documents built for people who already have an account number. Neither helps somebody sending one box. A live quote does, because it answers the only question that matters: what does this cost.

What we sell, plainly

US domestic parcel labels bought as a guest, with USPS, UPS and FedEx rates side by side and tracking on every one. We do not sell international labels, we do not run fulfillment, and we do not plug into store platforms. If your shipment is past parcel size, our freight review will route it instead.

Corrections happen, and we show them

If a carrier reweighs or remeasures a parcel after collection and bills the difference, that adjustment reaches you as a Stripe invoice by email with the carrier charge visible. There is no stored card to charge quietly, because we do not keep one. The terms page sets out exactly how that works.

Surcharge questions people ask

What is a shipping surcharge?

Any charge added to the base transportation rate. On a domestic parcel that means address-type fees, destination ZIP fees, fuel, awkward-package handling, oversize charges, address corrections and seasonal demand amounts. Freight contracts call the same category accessorial charges.

How much do surcharges add to a parcel?

It depends entirely on the box. Two cartons holding the same 25 lb quoted $29.52 and $77.56 on UPS Ground from Newark to Atlanta on 2026-07-28, and a 20 lb carton six inches longer quoted $203.72. Address and fuel fees are single dollars by comparison.

Which surcharge catches ordinary shippers most often?

The address pair. Residential delivery is $6.50 at UPS and $6.95 at FedEx, and the delivery area surcharge adds $4.50 to $8.85 when the destination ZIP is on a carrier list holding tens of thousands of entries. USPS charges neither.

Do I have to work these out before I ship?

No. The price our calculator returns for your box and your two ZIP codes is the whole amount collected at checkout, with everything applicable already inside it and SMKlog's charge included. Buy the label as a guest and print it.
