A residential surcharge is a flat fee for delivering to a home address rather than a business one. UPS publishes $6.50 on ground services and $7.00 on domestic air and 3 Day Select; FedEx publishes $6.95; USPS charges nothing of the kind on any domestic parcel class.

UPS figures were read from the Daily Rates edition of its 2026 guide, dated July 7, 2026, on 2026-07-28. The FedEx figure comes from that carrier list of 2026 fee changes, in force from the fifth of January. The Postal Service entry reflects Notice 123 as it stood on the same date, which carries no such line.
UPS states the rule as a delivery to, or a pickup request from, a location that is a home, including a business operating out of a home. That last clause is the one people trip over. A workshop in a garage, a print shop in a spare room and a reseller working out of an apartment are all residential in the carrier record, no matter what the business cards say.

The Postal Service took every one of those four. That is not an accident of the day: with no residential line and no area surcharge in its price list, USPS starts from a lower base on light parcels going to houses. On heavier and bulkier boxes the ordering flips, which is why we show all five rates rather than pick for you.
Address classification belongs to the carrier, not the shipper. Each one keeps its own record of which delivery points are commercial, and a street can hold both kinds a few doors apart. Marking a package commercial when the carrier disagrees produces a correction on the invoice, not a saving.
If the recipient can take the parcel at an office, a shop or a warehouse, the delivery charge falls away and the delivery area fee drops to the commercial band. On a UPS ground move that pairing is $6.50 plus the difference between $6.55 and $4.50 in a listed ZIP. For a repeat buyer it is worth asking the question once.
UPS applies a residential surcharge to an on-call pickup from a home as well as to the delivery, and adds a residential area surcharge on top in listed ZIP codes. Dropping the parcel at a counter or a locker on your way past sidesteps that side of it entirely.

Often yes. If the recipient can accept the parcel at a workplace, the delivery charge disappears and any area surcharge drops to the commercial band. Quote both addresses in our calculator and the difference shows up as a plain price gap.
