The UPS fee book

UPS surcharges, ordered by how often they hit

UPS publishes its surcharges in the same rate guide as its base prices, and for 2026 the ones that touch ordinary shipments are residential delivery at $6.50, delivery area at $4.50 to $8.85, additional handling from $26.75, and the large package tier from $219.50. Every figure above comes from the 2026 UPS Rate and Service Guide, U.S. 48, Alaska and Hawaii, Daily Rates, updated July 7, 2026, read from ups.com on 2026-07-28. Zone bands are collapsed to a range here; the per-page guides give the band-by-band amounts. Amounts change; the date on this table is the date to check against.

The order is deliberate. The first four rows attach to an address and land on a large share of ordinary shipments. The middle rows attach to the box and hit hard when they do. The last few attach to a mistake or a choice. If you ship a handful of parcels a month, the first four are the ones that quietly shape your costs.

A rate is a bundle, not a line item

UPS shows one number to a retail customer and keeps the parts on the invoice. The only shipper who ever sees a fee itemised is one with an account and a monthly bill, which is why the pages ranking for these terms are written for enterprises. A quote solves the same problem from the other end.

Two of these replace each other

Additional handling is not assessed when the large package surcharge applies, and within each group only the single highest charge is taken. UPS prints the priority order in its guide. That is worth knowing before you assume the fees stack four deep.

Minimum billable weights do quiet damage

A dimension-triggered additional handling package is rated at a minimum of 40 lb, and a large package at a minimum of 90 lb. On a light bulky carton those two rules cost more than the flat surcharge does. It is the reason a 20 lb box can outprice a 25 lb one.

See it as a single price

Every charge on this page is already inside the figure our calculator shows for your box and your two ZIP codes. On 2026-07-28 a 12 x 10 x 6 in box at 5 lb from Newark quoted $10.37 to Hoboken and $19.14 to Seattle, both through UPS Ground Saver, both final at checkout.

UPS surcharge questions

What surcharges does UPS add most often?

Residential delivery at $6.50 on ground services, the delivery area surcharge at $4.50 commercial or $6.55 residential, and the weekly fuel percentage. Those three attach to an address or a date rather than to anything unusual about the parcel.

Do UPS surcharges stack on top of each other?

Some do and some replace each other. Within additional handling only one charge applies, in a published order, and no additional handling charge is assessed at all when the large package surcharge applies. Address-based fees do add to the transportation charge.

Where does UPS publish these amounts?

In the UPS Rate and Service Guide for the current year. We read the 2026 Daily Rates edition, updated July 7, 2026, on ups.com on 2026-07-28, and every figure on this page comes from it.

Can I see a UPS price without an account?

Yes. Enter the box and both ZIP codes in our calculator, and the UPS rates come back alongside USPS and FedEx with everything applicable already included. Pay, print and go.
