What triggers UPS additional handling?
Actual weight over 50 lb, a longest side over 48 inches, a second-longest side over 30 inches, length plus girth over 105 inches, cubic size over 10,368 inches, or packaging that is not fully encased in corrugated cardboard. Soft-sided packs over 18 by 14 by 6 inches, banding, wheels, handles and cylindrical items are all named in the packaging group.
How much is the UPS additional handling charge?
For 2026 UPS publishes $46.50 to $58.75 by zone for the weight trigger, $30.00 to $40.50 for the dimension triggers, and $26.75 to $33.75 for packaging, per its Rate and Service Guide updated July 7, 2026. Only one charge is assessed per package.
Does it stack with the large package surcharge?
No. UPS states that an additional handling charge will not be assessed when a large package surcharge applies, because the larger tier takes over. That is a replacement, not a discount, and the large package amounts are several times higher.
Will the fee show in my quote here?
The price we show is the full amount collected at checkout for the box you describe, so anything the carrier applies to those dimensions is already inside it. Measure the packed carton rather than the item, since the box is what gets rated.
