What UPS Pack and Ship actually costs

Pack and Ship is two charges wearing one name: a packing charge the store sets at the counter, and a shipping label that any parcel comparison can quote. We priced the second half on a boxed table lamp, 14 x 14 x 24 in at 9 lb, Berkeley Heights, NJ to Denver, CO, on 2026-08-28, and it ran $46.71 to $80.24 depending on the service.

What the store charges to pack it and what the carrier charges to move it are set by two entirely different parties.

What Pack and Ship covers, in the store's own words

The UPS Store's own packing services page, read 2026-08-28, lists more than 20 standard box sizes plus custom boxing for uniquely shaped items, and names bubble cushioning, foam wrap and foam planks among its materials, with retention and suspension inserts built specifically for high-value electronics. The same page names the items it is built around: artwork, electronics, golf clubs and sports equipment, antiques, furniture and travel luggage — the categories that punish a badly chosen box.

None of that page states a price. What it sells is judgment about how to box an odd or fragile shape, and that judgment is billed separately from the shipping charge, at whatever the counter quotes that day.

The Pack & Ship Guarantee, and its real edges

“When we pack and ship your items using materials purchased from The UPS Store, we'll cover the cost of packing and shipping plus the value of your items, if lost or damaged.” — The UPS Store, Pack & Ship Guarantee page, read 2026-08-28.

  • Condition: the item has to be packed at a participating store with materials bought there, and shipped via UPS.
  • What it excludes: the guarantee page states directly that USPS shipments packed with free USPS packaging, and USPS.com shipments, are not covered.
  • What it pays: up to the declared item value (the lesser of actual value, replacement cost or repair cost), the full retail price paid for the packing materials and services, and the shipping cost, not including Declared Value charges.
  • The default cap: if the value was never declared and Declared Value was never purchased at the time of the transaction, the maximum reimbursement for the item itself is $100.

The guarantee is generous on paper, and it is also the clearest evidence that the packing charge is a real, itemized line on the receipt — the reimbursement explicitly repays it as its own amount, separate from the item and separate from postage.

The shipping half, priced

We described a table lamp with lampshade in a shipping box, 14 × 14 × 24 in at 9 lb, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922 to Denver, CO 80202. This is the label portion only — the number a counter adds for packing materials and labor is on top of every row here and is not in this table.

A lamp box is bulky for its weight, which is why the spread here is wider than a dense box on the same lane would show: $33.53 between the cheapest and dearest row, on 9 lb of actual product. Anyone comparing a counter's all-in Pack and Ship price against a number needs to isolate this half first, since it is the only half the counter did not set.

Where a packing counter earns its charge

Odd shapes, not weight

A lamp, a picture frame or a set of golf clubs breaks a standard box's geometry before it ever gets heavy. That is the packing skill being paid for, not the strength to lift the box.

Get the number before the tape

Materials and labor are billed separately from the label and set at the individual store, so the honest move is to ask for a total before anything is boxed, not after.

Bring your own box to skip half the bill

A box already on hand, packed at home with your own padding, only pays the label side of this page — the comparison a parcel calculator is built to run.

Common questions

How much does UPS Pack and Ship cost?

Two separate numbers, not one. Materials and labor are set by the individual UPS Store and not published anywhere as a chain-wide price. The shipping label underneath it is quotable: our 14 x 14 x 24 in, 9 lb boxed lamp priced $46.71 to $80.24 across five services, Berkeley Heights, NJ to Denver, CO, on 2026-08-28.

What does UPS Pack and Ship actually include?

The UPS Store's own packing services page lists more than 20 standard box sizes, custom boxing for oddly shaped items, and materials including bubble cushioning, foam wrap and foam planks, plus retention and suspension inserts built for high-value electronics.

What does the Pack & Ship Guarantee cover?

Loss or damage on an item packed at a participating store with materials purchased there and shipped via UPS. The store's own guarantee page states it reimburses the item's declared value, the full retail price of the packing materials and services, and the shipping cost, and states plainly that it does not cover USPS shipments or customer-packed boxes.

Is Pack and Ship pricing the same at every UPS Store?

No. UPS Store locations are independently owned franchises, and the packing charge is set at the counter. Ask for the number before the box is built.

How much is just the label, without the packing service?

That is the part a parcel comparison can price. Bring your own box, buy the label online, and pay only the carrier charge, which on our worked example ran $46.71 for UPS Ground at the low end.

  • The UPS Store, Pack & Ship Guarantee — coverage conditions, reimbursement terms and the $100 default cap. Read 2026-08-28.

Materials, labor charges and guarantee terms are set by the franchise network and can change by location and over time. Confirm the current terms with the store handling the box.
