What UPS actually charges to ship a guitar

$47.37 to $60.77 on UPS Ground, across a cased electric, a bagged bass and a cased acoustic, all quoted live on 2026-08-22 on three different routes. UPS's own package rules leave a guitar nowhere near a size limit. Below is every service UPS returned, and what its published limits actually say.

UPS's own rates, three guitars, one day

We ran three separate guitars through the calculator on 2026-08-22 and pulled every UPS line the quote returned. Each row is a real box on a real route, not an average.

UPS service tiers on three guitar shipments, each quoted live 2026-08-22 from Berkeley Heights, NJ.

The bass box is the longest of the three at 52 inches, yet it undercut the shorter acoustic box on Ground. Route matters as much as the carton: Chicago is a shorter pull from Berkeley Heights than Denver, and that alone accounts for part of the gap. Where a guitar sits against UPS's own limits

UPS's shipping dimensions page states a maximum package length of 108 inches, a maximum of 165 inches for length plus girth combined, and a maximum weight of 150 lb. A separate UPS page, on avoiding shipping charge corrections, sets out when a package is billed as a "Large Package": length plus girth over 130 inches, length over 96 inches, cubic size over 17,280 cubic inches, or weight over 110 lb, each carrying a 90 lb minimum billable weight. Read from UPS's Package Dimensions, Size Limits and Weight Guide and How To Avoid Shipping Charge Corrections, both on 2026-08-22.

Each guitar box measured against UPS's own published thresholds, read 2026-08-22.
BoxLengthLength + girthLarge Package?
Electric, hard case39 in83 inNo
Bass, gig bag52 in100 inNo
Acoustic, hard case44 in98 inNo

None of the three cross UPS's 96 inch length threshold or its 130 inch length-plus-girth threshold, and none is anywhere near 17,280 cubic inches or 110 lb, so none of them trigger the 90 lb Large Package minimum. A double-neck guitar or an oversize flight case is the realistic scenario where that changes.

A long guitar box does reach one lesser UPS threshold, though. The same UPS page sets additional handling at a longest side over 48 inches, a second-longest side over 30 inches, weight over 50 lb, or cubic size over 10,368 cubic inches. The bass carton above is 52 inches on its longest side, so it crosses the first of those; the 39 and 44 inch guitar boxes clear all four. The charge is already inside the prices in the table above, but it is worth knowing which side of 48 inches your carton lands on before you buy it. Our UPS additional handling page carries the current amounts by zone.

Common questions

How much does UPS charge to ship a guitar?

UPS Ground came back at $47.37 for a cased electric guitar, $57.33 for a bass in a gig bag, and $60.77 for a cased acoustic, on three different routes quoted live on 2026-08-22. Length and route move the number more than which guitar it is.

Does UPS have a size limit that could block a guitar?

UPS states a maximum package length of 108 inches and a maximum of 165 inches for length plus girth combined, on its own shipping dimensions page read 2026-08-22. The longest guitar box we've quoted, a cased bass at 52 inches and 100 inches of length plus girth, sits under both. What a long guitar box does reach is UPS's additional handling threshold, which starts at a longest side over 48 inches.

Which UPS service should I pick for a guitar?

Ground, unless the delivery date is fixed. On our acoustic-guitar quote, Ground priced at $60.77 against $106.68 for UPS's own 3 Day Select on the identical box; the days saved rarely matter as much as that gap.

What is UPS Ground Saver, and is it actually cheaper than Ground?

It is a slower, USPS-finished tier UPS offers under its own network, and on both guitar boxes we quoted it priced above standard Ground despite the name. Read every line of a rate table; don't assume the cheaper-sounding name wins.

Do I need to remove the guitar from its case for a UPS shipment?

No. UPS ships the cased or bagged instrument inside an outer shipping box; the case itself is never the shipping container. Detune the strings, cushion the case inside the box, and seal it before the label goes on.

Where this rule comes from

UPS revises its published limits without notice. Treat the figures above as what the page stated on the date shown, and re-check before shipping an unusually large or heavy case.
