Franchise pricing

What The UPS Store charges to ship a package

There is no single UPS Store price, because the stores are franchises. UPS states that its retail locations are independently owned and operated by franchisees, and that products, services, prices, and hours of operation may vary by location (per theupsstore.com, checked 2026-07-28). What can be pinned to a number is the alternative, so here is a 12 x 12 x 12 in carton at 15 lb quoted live from Newark to Atlanta, priced from $17.01.

Why the counter price moves between stores

The company is explicit about it. Two sentences from its own site do most of the explaining, and both were read on 2026-07-28.

  • The UPS Store locations are independently owned and operated by franchisees of The UPS Store, Inc.
  • Products, services, prices, and hours of operation may vary by location.

That is the whole answer to why the person behind you paid something different. A franchise sets its own retail prices, adds its own packing and materials charges, and keeps its own hours. Anyone publishing a UPS Store price chart is publishing one store on one day.

A 15 lb carton, priced five ways

We ran a plain 12 x 12 x 12 in carton at 15 lb through our calculator on 2026-07-28, Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303. All five rates that came back are printed here in the order the price puts them, with the transit windows exactly as each carrier returned them.

UPSGround$23.542-3 business days
FedExGround$28.595-6 business days

The spread across one box is $11.58, and the fastest row is not the dearest one. UPS Ground quoted 2-3 business days for $6.53 more than the cheapest row, which quoted 8-9. That trade is the entire reason to look at more than one carrier.

One row came back with no transit window at all. UPS Ground Saver frequently returns a price without a stated window, and rather than invent one we print it as blank.

A smaller box on the same lane

Halve the carton and the order reshuffles. This is a 12 x 10 x 6 in box at 5 lb, quoted on the same day between the same two ZIPs.

Four of these five sit inside 79 cents of each other. On a box that size the carrier choice barely matters and the speed choice matters a lot, which is a useful thing to know before you spend twenty minutes on a comparison.

A note on what is missing. Our rate feed returns a counter figure alongside some carriers and not others, and it returns none for UPS services, so no UPS counter price appears anywhere on this page. A zero in that field means not supplied, and printing it as a price would be a lie.

Bring your own box

Materials bought at a counter are priced by that store. A clean used carton with the old barcodes covered rides the same trucks at the same rate.

Drop-off is free of the counter

A prepaid label turns the visit into a handover. There is nothing to weigh, nothing to price and nothing to discuss.

Ask before they tape

Packing services are a separate line. Get the number first, because once a box is built the conversation is harder.

The UPS Store, answered

Does The UPS Store charge more than UPS?

No honest page can give you one number for that, because each location sets its own. UPS states that products, services, prices, and hours of operation may vary by location (theupsstore.com, checked 2026-07-28), so the only fair comparison is a live quote for the box in front of you.

What did a 15 lb carton cost online?

A 12 x 12 x 12 in carton at 15 lb from Newark 07102 to Atlanta 30303 quoted $17.01 with USPS Ground Advantage on 2026-07-28, with FedEx Ground Economy at $19.63, UPS Ground Saver at $19.78 and UPS Ground at $23.54. Those figures are checkout totals, not postage alone.

Can I print a UPS label at home instead?

Yes. Buy it here as a guest, print it on plain paper, tape it flat across the largest face and hand the parcel in at any UPS drop point. Nothing needs to be weighed or paid for at a counter.

Is packing at the counter included in the price?

It is charged separately and set by that location. UPS notes that various offers may be available at certain participating locations only, so ask what the packing charge will be before anyone starts cutting cardboard.
