What UPS 2nd Day Air means, in UPS's own words

UPS's own domestic shipping page files 2nd Day Air under the heading “Accelerated (2-3 Days)” — all 50 states and Puerto Rico, some limits in Alaska and Hawaii, packages up to 150 lbs and 108 inches long, Saturday delivery on offer. That is the plain definition. Two things those pages do not advertise as loudly: the money-back coverage attached to the name applies to only one version of it, and the “2-3 Days” belongs to a category the service shares with 3 Day Select — against 2nd Day Air itself the page states no day count at all.

Definition from ups.comLive quote, 2026-08-28Read 2026-08-28
A parcel tagged for an accelerated air service
A tier, not a promise of two days

UPS files it in a 2-3 day category it shares with 3 Day Select, and prints no day count for the service itself.

What the name actually buys, on a real box

ServicePriceQuoted window
UPS 2nd Day Air$15.383-4 business days
UPS Ground$10.314-5 business days

Notice the window on the air row: 3-4 business days, not 2. UPS Ground on the same box quoted 4-5. That is the estimate this quote carried, not a schedule UPS published for the lane — but it is the number a buyer actually sees before paying, and here the premium bought one day against Ground rather than the two the name suggests. Worth reading on your own route rather than assuming from the name; a wider set of lanes and weights sits on this site's UPS 2nd Day Air rates guide.

2nd Day Air against 2nd Day Air A.M.

UPS sells two versions of this tier, and the same support page draws the coverage line differently for each one, read 2026-08-28.

The A.M. version trades broader reach for a named early arrival — and, per UPS's own service guarantee page read the same day, it is one of the domestic services UPS currently lists as covered by its money-back terms. Plain 2nd Day Air does not appear on that list. The page states the coverage “remains suspended for all other UPS® shipments and services not specified in the above sections, from any origin to any destination,” and attaches no end date to that sentence. The October 18, 2021 date the same page carries belongs to a different item — an operational adjustment pushing UPS Next Day Air's residential commitment from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM — not to the suspension itself. Anyone paying the 2nd Day Air premium specifically for the promise of a refund on a miss should read that page for the shipment in question rather than assume the name carries one.

UPS prints no day count for it

The “2-3 Days” range belongs to the Accelerated category, which also holds 3 Day Select. Against the service itself the page lists coverage, weight and length — not a number of days.

The A.M. version carries the refund terms

Of the two, only 2nd Day Air A.M. shows up on UPS's own list of services its money-back terms currently cover, as read on 2026-08-28.

Saturday is on the menu either way

UPS's domestic shipping page lists Saturday delivery as available on both the plain and the A.M. version, without stating a separate fee for it.

Common questions

What does UPS 2nd Day Air mean?

UPS's own domestic shipping page groups 2nd Day Air under the heading Accelerated (2-3 Days), delivering to all 50 states and Puerto Rico with some limitations in Alaska and Hawaii, for packages up to 150 lbs and 108 inches long, with Saturday delivery available. It sits between UPS Ground and the overnight tiers on price and speed.

Is UPS 2nd Day Air covered by a money-back promise?

The A.M. version is; the plain version currently is not. The UPS service guarantee page lists 2nd Day Air A.M. among its covered domestic services, alongside the three Next Day Air tiers, but plain 2nd Day Air does not appear on that list. The page then states the guarantee remains suspended for every UPS shipment and service not named in those sections, from any origin to any destination, with no end date attached to it.

What is the difference between UPS 2nd Day Air and 2nd Day Air A.M.?

Coverage and timing. 2nd Day Air reaches all 50 states and Puerto Rico with some Alaska and Hawaii limits; 2nd Day Air A.M. is narrower, reaching the 48 contiguous states plus limited Alaska and Hawaii addresses, in exchange for a named A.M. arrival and the money-back coverage the plain version lacks.

Does 2nd Day Air always arrive in exactly two business days?

Not according to every quote. A 1 lb box from Berkeley Heights, NJ to Chicago, IL, priced through our checkout on 2026-08-28, came back with a 3-4 business day estimate on 2nd Day Air — an estimate attached to the quote, not a commitment UPS published for that lane. UPS's own page files the service in a 2-3 day category shared with 3 Day Select and states no day count against the service itself, so the estimate on the quote in front of you is the number to read.

What did 2nd Day Air cost against Ground on one real box?

$15.38 for a 1 lb, 10 x 8 x 2 in box from Berkeley Heights, NJ to Chicago, IL, captured through SMKlog's checkout on 2026-08-28, against $10.31 for UPS Ground on the identical box and route. A full weight ladder with more lanes sits on this site's UPS 2nd Day Air rates guide.
