Shopify Shipping against ShipStation, in 2026 pricing

Shopify Shipping sits inside a Shopify plan at no extra monthly fee and quotes pre-negotiated rates on USPS, UPS and DHL Express. ShipStation charges from $14.99 per month for the Starter plan, connects a wider carrier list, and adds automation and warehouse features that only start to matter above a few hundred orders a month. The pricing pages and features below were read from shopify.com/shipping and shipstation.com/pricing on 2026-08-11.

Neither vendor publishes the exact discount tables carrier by carrier, and both change them as the carriers reprice. Read the discount percentages as marketing ceilings rather than what you will actually see on your typical parcel; the real answer sits on the label price you get quoted for the box you actually ship.

When each choice wins on a Shopify store

The break-even is not a single order count. It is a combination of channel count, carrier mix and warehouse complexity. Three real cases below.

One Shopify store, USPS-heavy

Shopify Shipping wins outright. The rates ship out of one dashboard, the labels print in batches, and the monthly fee never enters the arithmetic. A ShipStation subscription pays for itself only if the rate difference on a specific parcel exceeds $14.99 across a month, which for a USPS-heavy store is unusual.

Shopify plus Amazon plus eBay

ShipStation wins on the workflow. Aggregating three channels' orders into one pack list, one label printer and one automation rule set is what the monthly fee is buying. Shopify Shipping does not reach the other two channels; each of those has its own label workflow.

Growing store, adding FedEx

ShipStation is the point at which a store connects its own FedEx account or accesses the negotiated FedEx pricing that ShipStation resells. Shopify Shipping did not, at the time of writing, connect a native FedEx account at consumer-tier rates.

Neither tool changes what carriers do. On a specific box and lane a UPS Ground rate is a UPS Ground rate; the platforms compete on the workflow around the rate and on how much of each carrier's discount table they pass through.

Where a subscription platform stops making sense

A useful reality check for a store owner: count the labels you printed last month, multiply by the average savings a subscription would have unlocked over your current rate, and compare that to the subscription fee. The number many small stores hit is unfavourable to the subscription, because the platform's discount is baked into the shown rate and does not stack with the carrier's separate account discount you were already receiving.

Two edge cases worth watching. First, a store with a small share of oversize parcels or long-tail carrier needs (regional LTL, cross-border) may find those parcels quoted better outside its main platform than inside it, whichever platform that is. Second, a store that occasionally needs a label without touching its subscription — for a returns pickup, a partner order, or a personal shipment — is exactly where a one-off label from SMKlog's calculator fits: no monthly, no minimum, no plugin.

Vendor pricing tables are revised without notice, and both platforms restructured their plans during 2026. Treat the figures above as what each vendor published on the date read, and check the current pricing page before committing to a subscription.

Common questions

Is Shopify Shipping cheaper than ShipStation?

On monthly cost, yes, because it has no subscription. ShipStation's Starter plan is $14.99 per month per shipstation.com/pricing read 2026-08-11, and pricing scales with volume and features.

Do the two get the same rate discounts?

Roughly. Shopify Shipping quotes up to 88% off USPS on shopify.com/shipping read 2026-08-11. ShipStation advertises 80% to 90% off major carriers. Whether the exact rate on a given box and lane is lower on one depends on carrier, service and volume tier.

What does ShipStation offer that Shopify Shipping does not?

Multi-store aggregation, deeper automation rules, connected FedEx and DHL alongside USPS and UPS, a warehouse-side pick-to-tote flow on higher tiers, and a branded returns portal on Standard and Premium.

Can I use SMKlog alongside Shopify or ShipStation?

SMKlog is not a plugin. Sellers use it directly to buy a specific label without a subscription and without a monthly minimum, either as the primary label source or as a fallback for outliers a subscription platform prices poorly on.
