Whole classes of mail are handed over at a post office box rather than carried to the door, and Saudi Post asks for a coded short address that an ordinary street label does not carry. Saudi Post asks that every item include a short address, a coded line that identifies a delivery point precisely. The listing gives its parts: a region code, a branch code, a division code, a unique letter and the building number. It goes on its own line below the addressee and above the ordinary delivery address, and mail to an individual should also carry the person’s mobile number.
Collect that string from the recipient before buying postage. A Saudi resident knows their short address the way an American knows a ZIP code, and a label built from a district name alone gives the delivery office far less than it appears to. The mobile number is not decoration either, because the network uses it to arrange handover.
One structural fact sits underneath all of this. First-Class Mail International, First-Class Package International Service and Airmail M-bag items are deliverable only from a post office box or by collection at the post office. For those classes there is no doorstep leg at all, which is why the box the short address points to does so much of the work.

The missing row is the one to plan around. On many lanes an Airmail M-bag is the cheap way to move a heavy sack of books or catalogs to one address; to Saudi Arabia that option is not offered, so printed matter travels as an ordinary parcel and pays parcel postage. The two parcel products share the same 66 lb ceiling and the same 79-inch length-plus-girth envelope, so a squarer carton is the way to use the weight rather than a long one.
The Saudi list carries the expected weapons and dangerous goods, and three entries besides that catch things a sender would not think twice about.
The list also names arms and munitions; coins, banknotes, securities payable to bearer, traveler’s checks, platinum, gold, silver, precious stones, jewelry and other valuable articles; obscene or immoral articles; radioactive materials; and perishable infectious biological substances. Valuables belong in a declared, insured parcel or in a courier’s hands, not in ordinary mail.
Medicines, pharmaceuticals, plant-based products and foodstuffs for medical purposes are not admissible unless the shipment is accompanied by prior authorization from the Kingdom food and medicine authority. That covers prescription drugs, but also supplements and medical foods that a sender might not classify as medicine at all. The authorization is arranged before the box is mailed, not produced after it lands, so a parcel sent on the assumption that a doctor’s note inside will be enough is sent on a false one.
A smaller restriction is worth knowing for anyone mailing recorded media. Recorded tapes, meaning cassettes, are not admitted in Registered Mail and travel only as ordinary mail, which removes the tracking and indemnity that Registered service would otherwise add.
Two numbers set the bill at the far end. Value added tax on imports runs at 15 percent, a rate the Kingdom raised from 5 percent in July 2020, and it is three times what the neighboring Emirates charge on the same box. On top of that, most goods carry the 5 percent Gulf common external tariff, the shared customs rate that applies across the bloc, with higher rates on a few categories. Both are settled at clearance and fall on the person receiving the parcel.
Do that arithmetic before deciding what to send. A 15 percent tax plus a 5 percent tariff turns a modest declared value into a real demand at the door, and for low-value goods it can cost more than the contents are worth to the recipient. The Kingdom’s postage is not quoted here, because the only labels this checkout prints are United States domestic ones.
