Same product category, two different outcomes below, purely on size.
Full-size: no parcel price at all
That is not a glitch. UPS publishes the ceilings on its own shipping dimensions page, read 2026-08-19: packages can weigh up to a maximum 150 lbs, the maximum length is 108 inches, and packages can be up to 165 inches in length and girth combined. This crate breaks two of the three at once.
- Weight. 260 lb against a 150 lb ceiling. No amount of careful crating closes that gap.
- Girth. Length plus twice the width plus twice the height comes to 78 + 60 + 84, which is 222 inches against a 165 inch limit.

Mini and youth bikes: clears the ceiling, not the price
Removing the front wheel and boxing a youth-size bike is enough to slide under every UPS threshold: 95 lb is under the 150 lb weight ceiling, and a girth of 40 + 44 + 56 works out to 140 inches, under the 165 inch combined limit. The parcel network accepts it. What it charges is a different matter.
| Carrier | Service | Price | Window |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPS | Ground | $247.55 | 5-6 business days |
| UPS | 3 Day Select | $414.79 | 5-6 business days |
| UPS | 2nd Day Air | $604.17 | 4-5 business days |
| FedEx | Ground | $649.63 | 5-6 business days |
| UPS | 2nd Day Air A.M. | $702.86 | 4-5 business days |
Cheapest was UPS Ground at $247.55, more than double the crate's own scale weight would suggest, and the priciest expedited tier ran to $702.86. SMKlog sells parcel labels only and does not arrange pallet or freight shipments.
Why the mini bike still costs so much
The carrier bills whichever is larger: what the crate weighs on a scale, or what its size works out to under the carrier's own formula. UPS publishes that formula on the same page: length times width times height, divided by 139 for Daily Rates. Apply it here.
Cubic size
40 x 22 x 28 inches is 24,640 cubic inches — a wide, flat crate rather than a dense, compact one.
Size-derived weight
24,640 divided by the 139 divisor comes to roughly 177 lb, close to double the 95 lb the crate weighs on a scale.
What actually gets billed
The larger number, every time. A wheel off and a bike drained shrinks the crate, but a bike-shaped box is never going to rate anywhere near its true weight.
Tighter crating helps more than switching carriers. Every inch trimmed off any one side comes straight off the cubic total, and for a box this shape that usually moves the price further than comparing services does.
What a specialist transporter publishes for comparison
Bike transporters are a different trade from both parcel and general LTL freight. One of them, Motorcycle Shippers, prints door-to-door bands openly on its prices page, read 2026-08-19.
- Under 100 miles: 175 to 350 USD.
- 100 to 500 miles: up to 650 USD.
- 500 to 1,000 miles: up to 750 USD.
- 1,000 to 2,500 miles: up to 1,100 USD.
- 2,500 miles and beyond: 900 to 1,350 USD.
Those bands are published for motorcycles generally rather than dirt bikes specifically, and a bike with a sidecar, an oversize aftermarket exhaust, or a non-running engine will not sit inside them. Weighed against the mini bike's $247.55 to $702.86 parcel spread above, a transporter is worth a call whenever the distance runs past a few hundred miles — the parcel numbers do not fall as fast as a transporter's per-mile rate does.
Before it goes in the crate
Drain the fuel
A tank with fuel in it turns a crate into a regulated shipment that most carriers and transporters decline outright, on either size class.
Disconnect the battery
Same reasoning as the fuel. Loose terminals and a live circuit are the two things that get a crate refused at the dock.
Remove what shrinks the box
A front wheel off a mini bike is what got our crate under the girth ceiling in the first place. Handlebars folded or removed do the same on many models.

Common questions
Can I ship a full-size dirt bike as a parcel?
No. UPS publishes a 150 lb maximum weight, a 108 inch maximum length, and a 165 inch maximum for length and girth combined, read on ups.com 2026-08-19. Our own crated dirt bike, drained and boxed at 78 x 30 x 42 in and 260 lb, returned zero parcel rates the same day. SMKlog sells parcel labels only and does not arrange pallet or freight shipments.
Can a mini or youth dirt bike ship as a parcel?
Sometimes, yes. A crated youth bike with the front wheel removed, boxed at 40 x 22 x 28 in and 95 lb, stayed under every UPS ceiling and returned five real rates on 2026-08-19, cheapest at $247.55 on UPS Ground. It clears the limits; it does not clear them cheaply.
Why does the mini bike cost so much if it fits under the limits?
Dimensional weight. The 40 x 22 x 28 in crate works out to 24,640 cubic inches, which divided by UPS's published Daily Rates divisor of 139 (ups.com, read 2026-08-19) comes to about 177 lb billable weight against the 95 lb the bike actually weighs. The carrier bills whichever number is larger, and for a crate this size it is never the scale.
What does a specialist transporter charge instead?
One motorcycle transporter, Motorcycle Shippers, publishes door-to-door bands on its own prices page read 2026-08-19: up to 650 USD for 100 to 500 miles and 900 to 1,350 USD for 2,500 miles and beyond. Those figures are aimed at full motorcycles, but a dirt bike on the same truck is priced the same way, and for a long haul it can beat the parcel numbers above.
Should I drain the fuel and disconnect the battery first?
Yes, on both size classes. A tank with fuel in it and a live battery turn a crate into a regulated shipment that most carriers and transporters will decline outright, parcel or freight.
