Draining is not optional
Fuel and a connected battery turn a crate into a regulated shipment. Transporters and freight carriers both expect the tank run down and the battery disconnected before the bike is strapped.
A whole bike is not a package, and the quickest way to prove it is to ask a parcel network for a price. We did that on 2026-07-28 with a crated 650cc machine and got nothing back at all. Here is what the refusal means and what the alternatives actually cost.
Once a bike is on a skid it is priced by density, distance and what each end of the lane needs. None of that comes off a parcel screen.
That is the correct answer rather than a fault. UPS publishes the ceilings on its own shipping dimensions page, checked 2026-07-28: packages can weigh up to a maximum 150 lbs, the maximum length is 108 inches, and packages can be up to 165 inches in length and girth combined. A crate that size breaks two of the three at once.
So the honest answer to the headline question is that a motorcycle is a freight movement, priced by a person against a specific lane. Send the crate dimensions, the weight and both ZIP Codes through our freight review form and you get a quoted number rather than an estimate off a table.
Bike transporters are a different trade from LTL freight, and some of them print their bands openly. Motorcycle Shippers lists door-to-door pricing on its own prices page, read 2026-07-28, in distance bands.
Two things are worth pulling out of that shape. The cost per mile falls steeply as the distance grows, because the expensive parts are the two ends rather than the middle. And the short-haul band is not cheap in absolute terms, which is why riding it or trailering it yourself keeps winning under about 300 miles. Those are one company's published figures on one day, not a market average, and a bike with a fairing, a sidecar or a non-running engine will not sit inside them.
Strip the bike and most of it drops back under the ceilings. Same lane, same morning, one boxed suspension assembly.
| Service | Price | Window returned |
|---|---|---|
| UPS Ground Saver | $30.48 | 6 days |
| FedEx Ground Economy | $30.49 | 7-8 business days |
| UPS Ground | $34.71 | 6-7 business days |
| USPS Ground Advantage | $35.33 | 5-6 business days |
| FedEx Ground | $50.28 | 7-8 business days |
Note the spread. The same box priced $30.48 at one end of the list and $50.28 at the other, a difference of nearly twenty dollars for a coast-to-coast crawl either way. The box is also carrying dimensional weight: 22 by 12 by 10 inches is 2,640 cubic inches, which divides out to a 19 lb billable figure against 14 lb on the scale. Trimming that carton by two inches in each direction is worth more than shopping the carriers. Our page on motorcycle parts pricing covers the rest of the catalogue.

Freight is priced on the space the crate occupies as much as the weight inside it. An inch of slack on every side is money, and a crate built tight to the bike is the cheapest thing you can do.
A short-haul transport quote and two tanks of fuel plus a trailer rental are often the same number. Distance is where the professional option starts winning clearly.
No. UPS publishes a 150 lb maximum weight, a 108 inch maximum length and a 165 inch maximum for length and girth combined (ups.com, checked 2026-07-28). A crated bike passes the weight limit roughly four times over, and our own quote on 2026-07-28 returned no parcel rates for one.
One specialist transporter, Motorcycle Shippers, publishes $900 to $1,350 for moves of 2,500 miles and beyond on its prices page, read 2026-07-28. That is one company on one day. A crated bike moving as LTL freight is priced separately against the lane, and a person quotes it.
It depends who is carrying it. A dedicated bike transporter usually straps the machine to a skid and does not need a crate. A general freight carrier is handling your bike alongside pallets of other goods, and a crate is what stops that going badly.
By density, distance and the conditions at each end. Our test crate came out at about 6.1 lb per cubic foot, which is light for its size and lands in an expensive band. Liftgate service, a residential address and an appointment delivery each add a line on top.
