Printing an eBay return label: buyer side and seller side

The button is in a different place depending on who is holding it. A buyer prints from Purchase history, in three clicks eBay documents exactly. A seller has three separate ways to get a label in front of that buyer, and they are not interchangeable — one charges the seller's account automatically, one asks the seller to buy a label somewhere else first. Everything below is quoted from eBay's own return-shipping help pages, read 2026-08-22.

A return label is priced the same way any other parcel is: box, weight, distance.

As the buyer

eBay's return-shipping help page for buyers, read 2026-08-22, gives the path in one line: “Go to Purchase history. Find the item under Returns and canceled orders. Select View return details. Choose Print label.” If the seller is covering the cost, the label is simply there to print. If the buyer is responsible, the same page says the buyer will “see the price of return shipping, and be able to purchase your label” from that screen.

No special hardware is required either way. The same page states: “You don't need a special printer or self-adhesive labels when printing return shipping labels. Simply print the label on normal paper and tape it to the package,” as long as the barcode stays legible for the carrier's scanner.

There is a deadline attached. Once a return is approved, eBay emails a “Send the item back” message naming a ship-by date, and the same help page warns that missing it lets eBay close the request without a refund — so the label is worth printing the same day it becomes available, not once the reminder arrives.

As the seller

eBay's return-shipping help page for sellers, read 2026-08-22, lists three separate ways to put a label in the buyer's hands, each with its own cost mechanics.

Return-label options for sellers, from eBay's return-shipping help page, read 2026-08-22.
OptionHow it worksWho pays and when
Send an eBay shipping labelSelect the option from the Returns dashboard and confirm the return addressCharged to the seller's account once the carrier scans the package; eBay's page says this is typically cheaper than the same label bought at retail
Upload your own pre-paid labelUpload the label image, then enter the carrier and tracking numberThe seller buys the label wherever they choose; signature confirmation is required once the item totals 750 USD or more
Label already sent with the itemEnter the carrier and tracking number, then check the box confirming a return label rode along with the original shipmentAlready paid for at the time the original sale went out

The middle row is where an outside label seller earns its place: a seller who would rather price the actual box than take whatever eBay's own negotiated rate returns can buy the label independently and upload it through that same flow.

What an eBay return label does not do

eBay's seller help page is direct that its own return shipping labels do not carry added coverage on the shipment itself, and that a label is not offered at all once the shipping cost would run higher than the refund it is attached to. Both of those are reasons a seller might reach for an outside label instead of the in-app one — particularly on a heavier or bulkier return where the built-in option simply is not on the table. Who ultimately owes for the return in the first place is a separate question decided by the return reason and the listing's policy, which our companion page on who pays for eBay returns works through in full.

A real quote: buying a return label yourself

The limitation above is worth pricing, because it bites on exactly the returns that hurt: heavy ones. On 2026-08-22 we quoted “boxed countertop espresso machine being returned to the seller” going from Denver, CO back to Berkeley Heights, NJ — a reversed sale lane, and the kind of parcel the “upload your own pre-paid label” route exists for.

What we typed

Boxed countertop espresso machine being returned to the seller

Packed box it returned

16 × 13 × 14 in
14 lb packed

Route

Denver, CO 80202
to Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922

Live SMKlog quote, 2026-08-22, for the reverse-lane appliance box above.
CarrierServicePriceEstimated transit
UPSGround Saver$30.076 business days
FedExGround Economy$30.765-6 business days
UPSGround$35.684-5 business days
USPSGround Advantage$44.804-5 business days
FedExGround$50.774-5 business days

UPS Ground Saver came out lowest at $30.07 while the top row on the same box asked $50.77 — a spread wide enough that which label a return rides on is a real decision rather than a rounding error, and wide enough to decide whether the shipping outruns the refund at all. A seller uploading their own label through eBay's return flow enters that carrier, service and tracking number on the upload screen described above. Rates move by lane and by day, so treat this table as one dated sample.

Common questions

Where do I print my eBay return shipping label as a buyer?

eBay's own return-shipping help page, read 2026-08-22, gives the exact path: go to Purchase history, find the item under Returns and canceled orders, select View return details, then choose Print label.

Do I need a special printer for an eBay return label?

No. eBay's help page states you do not need a special printer or self-adhesive labels — print the label on normal paper and tape it to the package, keeping the barcode clear enough for the carrier to scan.

How does a seller send a buyer a return label?

eBay's seller help page names three routes: send an eBay shipping label from the Returns dashboard (the cost is charged to the seller's account once the carrier scans it), upload a pre-paid label bought elsewhere, or check a box confirming a return label already rode along with the original shipment.

What happens if I miss the ship-back date on a return?

eBay's buyer help page warns that the return-confirmation email states a date to ship the item back by, and missing it lets eBay close the request without a refund.

Does an eBay return label include shipping protection?

No. eBay's seller help page states plainly that its return shipping labels do not include added coverage on the shipment, and a label is not offered at all once the shipping cost would exceed the refund amount.
