Two columns, one parcel
Post office shipping cost, and the price you never see at the window
Hand a box across a Post Office counter and it is priced from the retail column of USPS Notice 123. Buy the label electronically and the same box is priced from the commercial column, which sits lower on every row we copied out of the July 12, 2026 list. At 5 lb travelling four zones those two columns read $15.80 and $11.02.

Same parcel, two published prices
The counter and the keyboard buy the same carriage from the same network. Only the column changes.
Ground Advantage at the counter and on a keyboard
USPS publishes both prices in the same document. Notice 123 is the price list, the version in force is dated July 12, 2026, and it prints a retail column and a commercial column for USPS Ground Advantage side by side. Below is that pairing at the four weights the list breaks out, sampled at the nearest zone, a mid-range zone and the far one.

Read down the 20 lb row and the shape of the thing appears. Near home the two columns are $6.29 apart. Across the country they are $29.01 apart on the same box, for the same service, moving on the same trucks.
Priority Mail does the same thing
Priority Mail carries its own pair of columns, and Notice 123 prints its first two zones merged into one, so the nearest column below covers Zones 1 and 2 together.

The far corner of this table is where the money is. A 20 lb Priority parcel to Zone 8 reads $109.40 at the window and $68.06 electronically, a $41.34 difference on one shipment of the identical service.
What the counter figure looks like on real boxes
Published tables are one thing, a specific parcel is another. We quoted five boxes through our own calculator from Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303 on 2026-07-28. Each USPS row came back with two numbers attached: the amount charged at our checkout, and the counter figure the carrier returned for the same parcel. Nothing below was edited afterwards.

The two tables on this page come from different places. One is a published price list, the other is what a rating system returned for five specific parcels on one lane, so do not expect them to agree to the cent. What they agree on is direction: the window is the expensive door.
The 2 lb and 4 lb rows are worth a second look. Both landed on $8.48 at checkout while their counter figures were $1.45 apart, which is the first sign that parcel pricing is a grid of bands rather than a running total.
The counter is not overcharging you
A clerk cannot sell the commercial column. It is a different published price with its own conditions, so asking for it at the window is not a conversation that can end well.
Weigh before you decide
Bands change the answer more than distance does at the light end. A parcel that creeps from 15 oz to 1 lb 1 oz can jump a band, so put it on a scale before you commit to a service.

Is it cheaper to ship at the Post Office or online?
Online, in every comparison on this page. USPS Notice 123 prices a 10 lb Zone 6 Ground Advantage parcel at $27.50 retail and $19.94 commercial on the list effective July 12, 2026, and on our 2026-07-28 quotes the checkout figure came in under the counter figure the carrier returned beside it every time.
Why does the Post Office charge more than a website?
Because there are two published columns, not because anyone in the building added a markup. USPS prints a retail price and a commercial price for the same parcel in Notice 123, and the commercial one applies to labels bought electronically rather than at the window.
How big is the gap on a heavy box?
It grows with weight and distance. On the July 12, 2026 list a 20 lb Ground Advantage parcel to Zone 8 reads $69.40 retail and $40.39 commercial, a difference of $29.01 on one box, while 1 lb to Zone 1 reads $9.55 and $7.61.
