Seventy pounds per package, and the ceiling belongs to the box rather than to the order. USPS states the figure as a maximum weight of 70 lbs on its shipping services page, read 2026-07-29. What that page does not tell you is what happens when a carton of books lands on the line or steps over it, so we quoted three of them on the same lane the same morning.
The 70 lb carton priced below measures 18 x 14 x 12 in. Book sellers meet this rule long before anyone else does.
Two sentences from the Postal Service settle most of the arguments about this limit, and both were read on 2026-07-29.

The same shipping services page gives 70 lbs for Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail and USPS Ground Advantage as well. There is no heavier postal tier waiting above the limit, which is the part people get wrong: passing 70 lb does not move a parcel into a costlier postal band, it moves it out of the Postal Service entirely.

We packed the question as a real parcel: an 18 x 14 x 12 in carton of hardcover books at 70 lb, running from Berkeley Heights, NJ to Denver, CO, and put it through the checkout on 2026-07-29. Five rates came back.

The postal row is the one worth staring at. USPS accepts this carton, since 70 lb is the limit rather than a pound past it, but on this lane it asked more than two thirds again what UPS Ground asked for the same box. Being legal at the ceiling and being priced well at the ceiling are separate questions, and heavy cartons are where they part company most sharply.
Splitting is the move most sellers reach for last and should reach for first. We halved the load into a 14 x 11 x 10 in carton at 35 lb and quoted it on the identical lane, the identical morning.

Two UPS Ground labels at $48.69 add up to less than the single UPS Ground label at $103.77, on the same books, over the same route, quoted minutes apart. The saving is small in dollars and large in everything else: two 35 lb cartons can be carried by one person, they survive a drop far better than an overpacked 70 lb box, and a damaged corner costs you half a shipment rather than all of it. Split the load first and price it second.
A carton loaded to 70 lb of paper stresses the bottom flaps more than anything else a home shipper packs. Double-wall board and a taped H-seam on the base are the difference between a delivered box and a trail of books on a belt.
Books are estimated badly and consistently. Tape, void fill and the box itself add several pounds, and a carton guessed at 68 lb that scales at 72 is refused at the counter rather than adjusted.

To see where the postal network actually stops, we quoted a 20 x 16 x 14 in carton at 90 lb on the same route on 2026-07-29. Five rates returned and not one of them was postal.

The absence of a postal row is the finding. Twenty pounds past the ceiling there is nothing to buy from the Postal Service at any price, and the ground carriers take over with limits of their own further up. Read that table next to the split-carton table above and the decision writes itself: at 90 lb of books, two labels beat one by a wide margin, and the one label that does exist for the whole load costs more than both halves together.
Postal standards get revised periodically and the ceilings have shifted before. Before a shipment goes out, the Postal Service's own page is the thing to read, not a secondhand account of it such as this one. Every price above came from our production checkout on 2026-07-29 for the exact carton and route printed in the caption, and none of them is a Media Mail price.

Per box. Four cartons of 60 lb each are four acceptable packages. One carton of 90 lb is not an acceptable package at all, however you label it.
It leaves the postal network. Every USPS service on the shipping services page stops at 70 lbs, so the choice is a UPS or FedEx label or two smaller cartons. Our 90 lb carton returned five rates on 2026-07-29 and none of them was postal.
It does. The rulebook charges Media Mail per pound or fraction thereof and treats any fraction as a whole pound, so a carton on the scale at 30.2 lb is billed at 31.
It was on the lane we ran. Two 35 lb cartons at $48.69 each came in under one 70 lb carton at $103.77 on 2026-07-29, and neither box needs two people to lift it. Quote your own lane before assuming the same gap.
