Media Mail rates and the eligibility rules that matter
Media Mail is the cheapest way to move printed matter in the United States, and also the most misunderstood, because the discount is tied to what is inside the box. Prices below come from USPS Notice 123, retrieved 2026-07-27; the eligibility section reflects the postal rulebook rather than forum folklore.

Cheap postage with strings attached
The rate table is national and distance-blind, but USPS may open and inspect any Media Mail piece, and contents decide everything.

One national price per pound, any distance, effective 2026-07-12. Transit rides the deferred ground network, so allow more calendar time than a regular parcel service would take on the same route.

What actually qualifies
The postal rulebook defines a closed list of eligible contents. If your item isn't on it, the piece belongs at regular parcel rates, and enclosing even a note of general advertising voids eligibility. The list, condensed from the DMM standards:
- Books of at least eight printed pages, consisting wholly of reading matter
- Sound recordings, with video recordings classified alongside them
- Printed music, in bound or sheet form
- Playscripts and manuscripts for books, periodicals and music
- Printed test materials and educational reference charts
- 16-millimeter or narrower films, as positive prints in final viewing form
- Computer-readable media containing prerecorded information
Notice what's absent. Photo albums fail the books test because their pages hold photographs, not printed reading matter. Console video games sit outside the computer-readable media clause as USPS applies it, so a game cartridge travels at parcel prices. Magazines with ads, blank journals and empty storage media are out as well. Clerks can open any Media Mail piece for inspection, and a failed inspection means the recipient covers the difference.

For eligible contents, how big is the discount really? We lined the Notice 123 prices up against Ground Advantage quotes our checkout produced on 2026-07-27 for a 25 x 20 x 10 cm carton going from Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303.

At every step the book rate runs at roughly half the parcel rate or better, $11.02 against $20.86 at 10 lb, and remember the Ground Advantage column is a single lane while the Media Mail column covers the whole map. For a heavy box of qualifying books shipped far, no commercial service competes. For everything else in your closet, the comparison is moot, because eligibility comes first.
Mind the clock, not just the price
Media Mail is deferred: it loads after everything else. If the buyer paid days ago and is watching tracking, the savings over a $8.48 Ground Advantage label may not be worth the slower crawl and the eligibility risk.
Textbooks are the honest jackpot
A 10 lb stack of course books is squarely on the qualified list and squarely in the weight range where $11.02 postage looks absurd next to any alternative. This is the use case the rate was built for in 1938, and it still works.

How much does Media Mail cost in 2026?
Per USPS Notice 123, retrieved 2026-07-27: $4.39 for the first pound, $5.13 at 2 lb, $7.34 at 5 lb, $11.02 at 10 lb, topping out at $55.23 for the 70 lb maximum. Distance doesn't change the price; a book to the next town and to the far coast cost the same.
Do photo albums qualify for Media Mail?
No. The qualified list requires books of at least eight printed pages consisting wholly of reading matter, and an album's pages are photographs and blank sleeves, not printed text. Ship albums at regular parcel rates and skip the argument at the counter.
Can I send video games by Media Mail?
Console games don't qualify. The computer-readable media clause covers prerecorded data and software media, and USPS doesn't extend it to games for gaming consoles; a spot inspection can trigger postage-due at the regular rate. Movie DVDs, by contrast, are fine, since video recordings are classified with sound recordings.
