What can be shipped Media Mail?
The rulebook lists books of at least eight printed pages, printed music, sound recordings, playscripts and manuscripts, printed educational reference charts, printed test materials, narrow-gauge films, medical loose-leaf pages and their binders, and computer-readable media containing prerecorded information. Nothing else qualifies.
Can I ship video games or board games Media Mail?
No. Neither is described anywhere in DMM 273.3.1, and a blank disc or an empty flash drive fails too because the clause requires prerecorded information. A game disc is merchandise as far as the rulebook is concerned.
Does USPS really open Media Mail packages?
It can. USPS reserves the right to open and inspect Media Mail, and a parcel found to hold ineligible contents is repriced or returned. That is the enforcement behind the eligibility list, and it is the reason mixed boxes are a bad idea.
Is Media Mail cheaper than Ground Advantage?
On published prices, yes, and by a wide margin. USPS lists Media Mail at $7.34 for 5 lb and $11.02 for 10 lb, while the cheapest live rate we captured for a 5 lb box on Newark to Atlanta on 2026-07-28 was $13.52. What you give up is speed and the freedom to pack whatever you like.
