Is UPS shipping today?

Unless it is a Sunday or one of a short list of closure dates, yes. The version of the question worth answering sits a layer below that: whether the box by your door starts moving today or waits for tomorrow. Three separate conditions decide it, and the calendar is only the first. The ups.com pages cited here date from Wednesday 2026-07-29, and the rates were quoted a few hours later.

Six days, not seven

The network keeps a six-day week. What settles today is the collection time at the spot where the box changes hands.

Three checks, in the order they matter

All three have to hold before a parcel handed over this afternoon gets a scan tonight. Most people asking the question have already cleared the first one without noticing, and get caught by the third.

The three conditions behind the question, with the page that settles each. Every source named here was read on 2026-07-29 and is linked in full at the foot of this page.
What to checkWhere the answer livesWhat it decides
Is the date an operating dayThe UPS weekend page and the annual closure calendarWhether anyone is driving at all
Is your region under an alertThe UPS service alerts pageWhether the network is running but your corner of it is not
Have you already missed the collectionThe posted pickup time at the drop point you useWhether the first scan lands today or tomorrow

Nothing on that list is visible from a tracking screen, which is why tracking is the wrong place to start. A label that has not been collected yet has nothing to report.

Check one: is the date an operating day

UPS sets out the operating week on its weekend page: Monday through Saturday for residential and commercial parcels, with nothing moving on Sunday (read 2026-07-29). The same page describes Saturday coverage as reaching the majority of the United States population, which is a statement about reach rather than a promise for every street.

The other subtraction is the annual closure list, which is short and national. We transcribed the 2026 dates onto the UPS holiday schedule page rather than repeating them here, because that list gets revised and one page should own it. The Saturday side, including who pays extra for it, sits on the Saturday page. If today is a weekday outside that closure list, this check is done and you can stop thinking about it.

Check two: is anything suspended where you are

UPS keeps one page for disruptions and states the cause on it plainly: “Severe weather, natural disasters, and other conditions beyond our control can occasionally delay or disrupt our UPS services.” That page, at ups.com/us/en/service-alerts, was read on 2026-07-29 and carried an international entry about the Middle East and no domestic suspension.

Two things follow from reading it rather than guessing. The first is scope: an alert is written at network or region level, so it tells you whether a lane is out, not what happened to one parcel. The second is money. The same page attaches a consequence in its own words, that “the UPS Service Guarantee does not apply to shipments affected” — which is where a refund claim on a late air package quietly dies. Check the page before paying an air premium into a storm, not after.

Check three: did you make the collection

Of the three checks, this is the one that actually decides today. UPS lists four ways to hand a package over and one way to have it fetched, and each carries its own last moment (pickup and drop-off options page, read 2026-07-29).

A drop box runs on the driver's clock

UPS lists drop boxes as being “For 24/7 drop-off”. Round the clock describes when the slot accepts a parcel, not when a truck comes. The collection time posted on the door is the deadline that decides tonight's scan, and a box fed at 9pm is a box that leaves tomorrow.

A Customer Center is the building itself

UPS describes it as an “On-site UPS operating facility”. Handing a box to the facility takes out the leg between a storefront and the sort, which is why people chasing a same-day scan drive to one instead of walking to a counter.

A storefront keeps somebody else's hours

Access Points are described as “Drop-off or pickup at local businesses”, and The UPS Store is listed separately for its wider range of services. Both are open when the host business is open, which cuts either way: one can be taking parcels on an evening when the depot down the road is dark.

The fifth route removes the guesswork. UPS describes Smart Pickup as a service where “A pickup is automatically scheduled when you create a shipping label”, and lists Daily Pickup, Daily On-Route Pickup, Day-Specific Pickup and Saturday Pickup as the recurring arrangements alongside it. For anyone shipping more than a box or two a week, a standing pickup turns this whole question into somebody else's problem.

What today's ship date actually buys

One carton, two destinations, both priced through our calculator on the morning of 2026-07-29. Prices are what a customer pays, carrying our charge alongside the carrier's, and the window column is whatever came back attached to that rate.

Every rate returned for a 14 x 11 x 9 in carton at 6 lb, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922 to Chicago, IL 60601, quoted 2026-07-29. Prices are what a customer pays at checkout, our charge already inside them.

The same 14 x 11 x 9 in carton at 6 lb sent the other way, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922 to Los Angeles, CA 90012, quoted 2026-07-29. Prices are what a customer pays at checkout, on the same basis as the table above.

Distance costs days before it costs dollars. UPS Ground on the identical box slid from a 4-5 day window into a 6-7 day one on the transcontinental run, while Ground Advantage held its 4-5 day window the whole way across. On the long lane the cheapest row is also the slowest: FedEx Ground Economy came back with a 7-8 day window, three days behind the Ground Advantage row sitting immediately above it in price. That is the trade most people make without noticing when they sort by price alone.

One row deserves a squint. UPS 3 Day Select on the Chicago lane came back with the same 4-5 day window as UPS Ground. An estimate attached to a rate is not the commitment the service is sold on, and where the two disagree the name of the service is the one to read.

Common questions

Is UPS shipping today?

On any Monday through Saturday that is not one of the national closure dates, yes. UPS states on its weekend page, read 2026-07-29, that it delivers Monday through Saturday for residential and commercial parcels and makes no Sunday deliveries. Whether your own box starts moving today is the separate matter of collection times.

Does UPS run on Sunday?

No. The weekend page is flat about there being no Sunday deliveries, and the recurring pickup options UPS lists stop at Saturday Pickup. A label bought on a Sunday is valid; it simply waits for Monday to get its first scan.

How do I find out whether UPS is suspended in my area?

UPS keeps one page for it, at ups.com/us/en/service-alerts. It is written at network and region level, and it is the page that says whether weather or another event has taken a lane out. Anything shipment-specific is handed to tracking instead.

If I drop a package off today, does it ship today?

Only if you beat the collection at that spot. A drop box is open around the clock but is emptied once a day at a posted time, and a storefront keeps the hours of the business hosting it. Missing that hour moves the first scan to the next operating day without changing anything you paid.

How long does a package handed over today take?

It depends far more on distance than on the hour. The same 6 lb carton quoted on 2026-07-29 came back at 4-5 business days on UPS Ground to Chicago and 6-7 business days on UPS Ground to Los Angeles, for $14.80 and $22.47.
