Voiding a shipping label in Shopify

Wrong weight, canceled order, duplicate purchase — Shopify has a paved path for all three, and it starts inside the order rather than in any settings screen. The steps, the 30-day clock and the credit mechanics below come from help.shopify.com, read 2026-08-09, with the conditions that make the button disappear spelled out.

Inside the order

Every label Shopify sells stays attached to its order, and unwinding one happens from the same screen that bought it.

The steps, desktop and app

On desktop, Shopify's help page routes it through five clicks: open Orders, select the order that carries the label, find the fulfillment card in the Fulfilled section, open its menu and choose Void label, then pick a reason and confirm with the button Shopify names “Void label and insurance.” In the mobile app the same journey runs through the order's shipping label menu with a Void shipping label action. Nothing about the parcel itself is required — the box can already be repacked or repriced by the time the label is unwound.

Conditions a Shopify Shipping label must meet to be voided, as published at help.shopify.com and read 2026-08-09.
ConditionWhy it exists
No older than 30 days from purchaseThe platform's refund window on carrier postage closes after a month
No tracking events on the numberA scan means the carrier began performing the transportation that was bought
Not a USPS First Class Mail labelShopify excludes that service from voiding and calls its labels non-refundable
Not on a USPS manifest in the last 15 minutesA freshly manifested label needs the paperwork to settle before it can unwind

Return labels sit outside the whole mechanism. Shopify bills them only when the carrier scans one into the stream, so an unused return label costs nothing and simply expires — the help page states they cannot be voided at all.

Where the money goes, and when it does not

Credit, not a card refund

A voided label's cost is credited to the Shopify account and drawn down by future label purchases. Sellers who buy labels rarely can wait a while to see the money again, which is worth knowing before choosing where to buy postage.

When the void is refused

Shopify's instruction for a label that fails the conditions is to contact its support about a refund or credit, buy a replacement label for the shipment, and attach the new tracking number to the order so the buyer's page stays truthful.

The habit that avoids all this

Most voids trace back to guessed weights. Weighing the packed box before purchase, not after, is the single change that empties this page from a seller's routine.

Labels bought through SMKlog instead of a platform follow carrier void rules directly, and the general version of this problem — every carrier's window, what a scan does to eligibility — is mapped in how to void a shipping label. The wider decision of running postage through Shopify or beside it is weighed in the Shopify Shipping comparison.

Common questions

How do I void a shipping label on Shopify?

Open Orders in the admin, select the order, find the label in the Fulfilled section, choose Void label from its menu, pick a reason, and confirm. The Shopify app follows the same route on a phone. Steps per help.shopify.com, read 2026-08-09.

How long do I have to void a Shopify label?

Shopify's conditions require the label to be no older than 30 days from the purchase date and to have no tracking events. A label the carrier has already scanned is spent regardless of age.

Where does the refund go?

To your Shopify account as a credit that offsets future label purchases. It does not return to the card, which surprises sellers doing it for the first time.

Why is the void option missing on my label?

One of the published conditions has failed: the label is past 30 days, a tracking event exists, it was bought with the USPS First Class Mail service, or it joined a USPS shipping manifest within the last 15 minutes. Shopify's page says to contact its support about a credit and buy a replacement label.

Do unused return labels need to be voided?

No. Shopify return labels bill on the carrier's first scan, so an ignored one never becomes a charge. The help page notes they cannot be voided and expire on their own instead.
