Home Delivery is the detail most people miss. It is the residential arm of the ground network, it works weekends, and it carries a residential surcharge per package that FedEx publishes on the same page. If the destination is a house, that surcharge is already inside the price you see at checkout here, so compare totals rather than base rates.

One result in that run surprised us and one did not. The economy product held its lead all the way up to 40 lb, sitting under FedEx Ground on the heavy carton and further under it coast to coast, which is unusual: on most carriers the economy tier flips expensive as boxes get heavy. And the transit estimates were long. A six or seven day window from New Jersey to Georgia is the price of the cheapest purple option, so anything with a deadline belongs on FedEx Ground or in the Express family instead.
Loyalty to a carrier is expensive. Here is the same 15 lb carton on the same morning, with every rate the calculator returned for the Atlanta lane, so the FedEx row can be judged against its neighbours rather than on its own.

FedEx won the row by fifteen cents and lost the week by three days. That is the trade worth naming out loud before you pick: the top of this table is separated by less than two dollars while the estimates span from two days to seven, so on this lane the sensible read is to buy speed for pocket change rather than to chase the lowest line.

The practical gap is depth. A FedEx drop box swallows a six-inch-deep carton where a UPS one stops at three, which covers most shoe boxes and a fair number of small appliances. Above 55 pounds, or past the drop box envelope, a staffed FedEx counter is the answer at either brand, and a prelabeled parcel needs nothing done to it there beyond a scan.
