Underneath that line sits a wide oversize band where the box still moves as a parcel but carries a published charge, and the amounts for 2026 are large enough to change which box you pack.

FedEx states the criteria plainly on its oversized items page, checked 2026-07-28: a shipment is classified as freight at a weight heavier than 150 lbs, or at a combined length and girth of more than 165 inches. The oversize charge starts much earlier, at dimensions that exceed 96 inches in length or 130 inches in length and girth, and the carrier bills those packages on actual rounded weight or dimensional weight, whichever is greater, with a 90 lb minimum.

One rule keeps the arithmetic sane. FedEx writes that if a package qualifies for more than one of additional handling by dimension, packaging or weight, the oversize charge, or the unauthorized package charge, only the highest of them applies. The inch and pound triggers for additional handling were not stated on the pages we could reach, so this page gives the amounts and the names without inventing a threshold to go with them.

At 15 lb the direct ground service asked about nine dollars more. At 70 lb it asked seventy-one dollars more, and the economy tier quoted 6-7 business days against 5-6 for the faster one. When a heavy box is not urgent, that spread is the single biggest saving on this page. Push the same lane to 150 lb in a 30 x 24 x 24 in carton and no FedEx price comes back at all; the shipment is tagged for a commercial freight review instead.

An oversize package is rated at a minimum billable weight of 90 lb regardless of what the scale says, and the oversize charge lands on top. A 30 lb sculpture in a tall crate can therefore price like a 90 lb parcel with a three-figure charge attached. Shrinking the carton below 130 combined inches is usually worth more than any packing trick inside it.
The FedEx oversized items page we checked on 2026-07-28 gives the freight criteria and the oversize thresholds without separating FedEx Express from FedEx Ground and Home Delivery, and it does not say what happens to a package that clears the oversize band but stays under the freight line. Where a carrier does not publish a number, this page leaves the gap visible rather than filling it.
