How to ship a package with USPS

The Postal Service owns the light end of American shipping, visits every address in the country anyway, and gives away much of its packaging. Using it well comes down to three choices made in the right order: the service, the box, and where the label comes from. This page walks all three with sourced prices.

Shipping a package through USPS
Everywhere, every day

USPS already drives past the destination six days a week, which is much of why its light-parcel prices are hard to beat.

Step one: pick the right USPS service

Per usps.com, checked 2026-07-27: Ground Advantage is the default parcel service, expected delivery in 2-5 days, starting at $7.90 at the Post Office, up to 70 lb, with up to $100 of included coverage. Priority Mail states 2-3 day delivery from $11. Priority Mail Express is the 1-3 day premium tier. Most boxes with no deadline belong on Ground Advantage; the others exist for calendars.

Ground Advantage carries the everyday

Books, clothes, spare parts, marketplace sales: this tier hauls them for the least money in nearly all our quote data. On 2026-07-27 it took a 3 lb box from Newark to Atlanta for $8.48 through our checkout.

Priority Mail buys the calendar back

Same 70 lb ceiling, tighter stated window. Our 2 lb quote from Los Angeles to New York put Priority at $22.34 with a 2-3 business day window on the same day Ground Advantage quoted $11.04 and 6-7 days on that lane.

Flat rate is a niche, not a default

Flat-rate prices ignore distance and weight inside the 70 lb cap, which pays off only when both would otherwise punish you. The arithmetic section below shows one win and one loss with sourced figures.

Step two: the box, possibly at no cost

USPS lists its Priority Mail supplies at $0.00 on store.usps.com, checked 2026-07-27, including the small box at 9-7/16 × 6-7/16 × 2-3/16 in and the large at 12-1/4 × 12 × 8-1/2 in. The catch is contractual: those cartons ride Priority Mail pricing only. A Ground Advantage shipment goes in your own box, which any sound reused carton satisfies.

Flat rate against weighed pricing, with sources

Flat-rate figures are USPS retail prices from Notice 123, effective 2026-07-12, retrieved 2026-07-27. Weighed rows are SMKlog checkout quotes from 2026-07-27.
ShipmentWeighed-box quoteFlat-rate list priceWhich wins
3 lb box, Newark to Atlanta$8.48 Ground Advantage$24.80 medium flat rate boxWeighed, by a wide margin
15 lb box, Los Angeles to New York$35.33 Ground Advantage$34.00 large flat rate boxFlat rate, narrowly, with a faster stated window

The pattern generalizes: light boxes lose badly to weighed pricing under flat rate, while dense loads crossing many zones can sneak under it. Also from Notice 123: the Priority flat rate envelope lists at $12.90 retail and the small flat rate box at $13.65, and Media Mail hauls books from $4.39 at 1 lb to $11.02 at 10 lb for shipments that meet its content rules.

Step three: label and hand-off

  1. Quote the packed box online. Enter measurements or describe the item and let the calculator estimate; the USPS rows appear beside UPS and FedEx with prices and windows.
  2. Buy as a guest and print. Payment runs through a Stripe page with no USPS registration, and the label arrives print-ready with tracking live. No printer at home means the Label Broker route, where a QR code becomes paper at a participating Post Office.
  3. Stay inside the limits. Per Notice 123, retrieved 2026-07-27: 70 lb maximum and 130 in combined length plus girth, with oversized pricing past 108 in. Check the numbers on anything bulky before paying.
  4. Let go of the package. A labeled parcel needs no counter transaction, so a collection point or a quick counter drop both work, and the first scan opens its tracking history.

USPS shipping questions

Which USPS service should a normal package use?

Ground Advantage unless a date forces otherwise. Per usps.com, checked 2026-07-27, it expects delivery in 2-5 days, starts at $7.90 at the Post Office, and accepts up to 70 lb; our own 3 lb quote on it ran $8.48 from Newark to Atlanta on 2026-07-27.

Are USPS boxes really given away?

The Priority Mail lineup is: store.usps.com listed those boxes and envelopes at $0.00 when we checked on 2026-07-27. They are tied to Priority Mail pricing, so a Ground Advantage shipment should ride in your own carton instead.

When is a flat rate box worth it?

When the load is heavy, dense and far-bound. Our 15 lb coast-to-coast comparison had the large flat rate box listed at $34.00 against a $35.33 weighed quote, while the 3 lb short-lane box would have wasted money on flat rate at $24.80 against $8.48 weighed.

How big and heavy can a USPS package be?

Per USPS Notice 123, retrieved 2026-07-27: 70 lb at most, no more than 130 in of length plus girth, and oversized pricing applies past 108 in. Anything beyond that belongs with another carrier or a freight quote.
