Flat
Simple to set, blind to distance. A buyer three states away pays the same line as a buyer next door, which either overcharges the near buyer or undercharges the far one.
Etsy is the storefront and the label counter, not the carrier. A sale starts a chain the seller owns end to end: price the shipping, buy the label in Shop Manager, print a packing slip if you use one, pack, and hand the box to whichever carrier the label names. Every quote below is Etsy's own Seller Handbook and help center wording, read 2026-08-28.
Pricing, the label, and the packing slip all live in the same place.
Etsy's Seller Handbook states the responsibility plainly: “As an Etsy seller, you're responsible for ensuring orders are sent to buyers,” whether that means “you dispatch your orders yourself, or use a third party to help with fulfillment.” The same guide frames the setup work as a short strategic list before the first sale ever ships: “Consider what shipping delivery options and timelines will work well for you,” “Create a workflow with expectations that you can easily meet,” gather packaging, “Create your shipping policies” and “Set up your shipping profiles,” then “Set aside time regularly to fulfill orders.”
Shipping profiles are what save that setup from being redone on every listing — one profile carries a processing time, an origin, and a pricing method that every item using it inherits.
A shipping profile prices one of two ways. Flat shipping is one number, set by the seller, the same for every buyer on that listing. Calculated shipping runs each order through Etsy's own pricing off the seller's location, the buyer's location, and the item's size and weight, which is why two buyers on the same listing can see two different totals.
Simple to set, blind to distance. A buyer three states away pays the same line as a buyer next door, which either overcharges the near buyer or undercharges the far one.
Reads the actual lane, but only as accurately as the size and weight the seller entered. Our page on Etsy calculated shipping measures how far that estimate can drift from the label once the real carton is bigger than the item alone.
By default, whichever number the profile produces lands on the buyer's checkout. A seller can instead fold shipping into the item price; our page on who pays for shipping on Etsy works through the free-shipping threshold that pushes many shops that way.
Etsy's help center walks the label purchase through Shop Manager: sign in, go to Shop Manager, choose Orders, select the order, and click Download Shipping Label. Sellers with several orders at once can select them together on the Sold Orders page and print shipping labels in one pass. On printing, the article is specific: “Labels must be printed on 8.5” x 11” white paper or self-adhesive label sheets using a high-quality inkjet or laser printer,” and separately notes that “Only USPS shipping labels can be formatted for 4 x 6 label printers,” naming the DYMO LabelWriter 4XL and Zebra GC 420d as the label printers Etsy supports.
Once printed, the label goes on with “clear packaging tape” over the top of the package, with the instruction to “make sure you don't block or obscure the label barcode.” Buyers get their own signal once this step is done: the article states buyers get a shipping notification on the label's ship date.
A packing slip is not the label and does not replace it. Etsy's help center defines it as “a record of a transaction for buyers, meant to be included along with an order for a shipment,” distinct from an order receipt, which the same article calls “physical records of transactions for sellers.” The article is explicit that “Neither packing slips nor order receipts are considered invoices for buyers.”
Printing one takes a separate pass through the same order screen: sign in, open Shop Manager, choose Orders, select the order, choose More actions, then Print, and check the box for packing slips or order receipts as needed. Nothing about a packing slip changes what the carrier bills — it rides inside the box for the buyer's benefit, not the carrier's.
We told the SMKlog calculator a hand-knit wool throw blanket had sold, folded and packed in a poly mailer, and gave it Berkeley Heights, NJ to Miami, FL. It estimated a 16 × 12 × 4 in parcel at 3 lb and returned five live services.
| Carrier | Service | Price | Quoted transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS | Ground Advantage | $11.06 | 3-4 business days |
| UPS | Ground Saver | $13.73 | 5 business days |
| FedEx | Ground Economy | $14.07 | 5-6 business days |
| UPS | Ground | $14.13 | 5-6 business days |
| USPS | Priority Mail | $20.70 | 3-4 business days |
USPS Ground Advantage won this run at $11.06, the whole checkout figure with SMKlog's charge already inside. A shop running calculated shipping is aiming to land near a number like this one; a flat-rate shop that never checks is guessing at it.
Etsy revises its help articles without notice. Treat the wording above as what was published on the date shown, and check Shop Manager directly before relying on a detail here.
The seller. Etsy's own Seller Handbook is direct about it: as an Etsy seller, you're responsible for ensuring orders are sent to buyers, whether you dispatch orders yourself or use a third party to help with fulfillment. Etsy sells the label and hosts the order; it does not pack or carry anything.
Either a flat amount set on the listing or calculated shipping, which prices each order from the seller's location, the buyer's location, and the item's size and weight. Our separate page on Etsy's calculated shipping works through exactly how that number forms and where it drifts from the real label.
In Shop Manager. Etsy's help center describes signing in, going to Shop Manager, choosing Orders, selecting the order, and clicking Download Shipping Label, with labels printed on 8.5 x 11 in paper or self-adhesive sheets, or on a 4x6 label printer for USPS labels specifically.
No. Etsy's help center describes packing slips as a record of a transaction for buyers, meant to be included along with an order, and states plainly that neither packing slips nor order receipts are considered invoices. The shipping label is a separate document the carrier reads; the packing slip rides inside the box for the buyer.
The buyer, by default, unless the seller has built the cost into the item price. Our separate page on who pays for shipping on Etsy works through the free-shipping threshold and what absorbing the cost actually does to a seller's margin.
