Etsy shipping labels, from carrier list to real rate

Etsy sells labels for USPS, UPS and FedEx at a negotiated rate, plus a handful of international carriers. The rate is real, the retail comparison is smaller than the seller-handbook headline, and there are a few kinds of order where buying the label off Etsy still comes out ahead. This page shows both, quoted 2026-08-11.

What Etsy actually sells

Etsy prints labels through its own shipping tool. Etsy's own seller handbook page says outright: “Etsy negotiates discounts with USPS, UPS, and FedEx, then passes along the savings when you buy domestic and international shipping labels.” Read on etsy.com 2026-08-11. Domestic sellers see USPS, UPS and FedEx; international sellers see Canada Post, Royal Mail, Evri and Australia Post depending on shop country.

CarrierWhat Etsy sellsWeight ceiling on the label
USPSGround Advantage, Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, Media Mail, First-Class Package International70 lb per package
UPSGround, 3 Day Select, 2nd Day Air, Next Day Air family, Worldwide Expedited/Saver150 lb per package
FedExGround, Home Delivery, Ground Economy, Express Saver, 2Day, Priority Overnight, International Ground and Express150 lb per package

Etsy's USPS labels can be purchased at commercial rates on Priority Mail and Ground Advantage, and cubic pricing is available where the parcel qualifies. The seller handbook line is “save up to 30% compared to retail postage rates,” and “up to 35 percent” off FedEx retail for the FedEx addition. “Up to” is the operative phrase; the real discount depends on the service, the zone and the weight.

A 1.2 lb candle order, priced two ways

The clearest way to see what the Etsy negotiated rate is worth is to look at one order in one lane against USPS retail. This is a 6 × 6 × 4 inch box holding a handmade soy candle, 1.2 lb, going from Berkeley Heights, NJ to Los Angeles, CA (zone 8). Quoted through our own quote engine on 2026-08-11.

6 × 6 × 4 in, 1.2 lb, 07922 to 90001, quoted 2026-08-11. Retail column is what USPS charges at the counter for the same parcel; the commercial column is what a negotiated tool such as Etsy Shipping Labels shows.
ServiceUSPS retailCommercial rate
USPS Ground Advantage$19.05$12.53
USPS Priority Mail$21.55$16.73
UPS GroundNot published as counter retail$12.52
FedEx Ground EconomyNot published as counter retailNot selected by our engine on this lane

Two things to notice. First, the 30% headline holds on this parcel for Ground Advantage but not for Priority. Second, UPS Ground came out a cent under USPS Ground Advantage on the same commercial rate card, which is the kind of gap Etsy's own picker will not surface unless the seller opens the alternate carrier tabs in the label screen.

A larger 10 × 8 × 6 in, 3.5 lb ceramics box on the same date to Denver quoted $11.95 on USPS Ground Advantage against $20.90 retail, and $13.78 on UPS Ground Saver. Denver zones this lane at 6, and the retail-versus-commercial gap widens as the zone climbs.

When Etsy's label is not the right one to buy

The buyer picked a slow service

Etsy's calculated shipping tool defaults to Ground Advantage inside the US. A seller who wanted the buyer to see 2-day options at checkout has to configure them under the shop shipping profile, or the buyer never sees the upgrade.

Cross-order bundling

Etsy prints one label per order. Two orders from the same buyer, on the same day, need to be manually combined by cancelling one label and reprinting on the total weight through the same tool.

The box exceeds a service ceiling

USPS Ground Advantage tops out at 70 lb and 130 in length plus girth. A long instrument case or a heavy piece of pottery drops off the USPS side entirely; the Etsy screen still shows the parcel but excludes the label.

A parcel that Etsy cannot label at all — a case of wine, a battery-only shipment, a hazardous chemistry kit — still needs a compliant label from somewhere. That is where a general-purpose calculator that supports the same carriers, at similar commercial rates, is worth checking against the Etsy quote before printing.

Where these rules come from

The commercial-rate figures above were pulled from our own quote engine on 2026-08-11 for the parcels described. USPS retail comes from the USPS API against the same parcel. Etsy's exact negotiated rate for a given shop can differ by a cent or two.

Common questions

Which carriers does Etsy sell shipping labels for?

USPS, UPS and FedEx for domestic US sellers, plus Canada Post, Royal Mail, Evri and Australia Post depending on shop country. Etsy lists the supported service families on its per-carrier help pages, read 2026-08-11.

How much cheaper is an Etsy label than the Post Office?

On a 1.2 lb candle from NJ to LA, Etsy's commercial rate on USPS Ground Advantage was $12.53 against $19.05 retail on 2026-08-11 — a $6.52 gap. Priority saved less. The seller handbook claim of “up to 30%” is realistic on Ground Advantage in higher zones.

Can I buy an Etsy label without a printer?

Only for USPS on qualifying weights, using the QR code option shown in the label screen; take the code to a Post Office counter and USPS prints the label. UPS and FedEx labels on Etsy still need a printer.

What weight can an Etsy label cover?

Up to 70 lb on USPS Ground Advantage and Priority. Up to 150 lb on UPS and FedEx services offered inside Etsy. Anything above that needs to be sent by a freight quote from a person, not a parcel label.

When is a non-Etsy label the right call?

When the parcel needs a carrier or service Etsy does not show, when two orders from one buyer need to be combined, when a UPS or FedEx rate for the same lane comes in below the USPS quote Etsy defaulted to, or when the item is not eligible to travel on Etsy's label at all.
