Seller margin

What Etsy's free shipping guarantee costs you

Nothing about it is free at your end. Etsy's guarantee covers US orders of $35 and above, so every label on those orders comes out of the margin between $35 and what the product cost you to make.

What the guarantee costs on four real parcels

The threshold is fixed at $35. The label is not. Here is what four everyday handmade parcels cost on one lane, and what each leaves behind on a $35 order before materials, fees and your time.

A mug leaves $26.52 of the order to cover the product, the packaging, Etsy's cut and your labour. A 15 lb carton leaves $17.99 of the same $35, which is a different business. Sellers with a wide product range often find the guarantee works for half the catalogue and quietly bleeds on the rest.

Distance is the variable nobody budgets for

Absorbing the label means absorbing whichever label turns up. The same 5 lb box priced across eight destinations on 2026-07-28 shows how wide that range gets.

A shop that sets prices from its local orders and then wins a run of West Coast buyers has just given away $8.77 a parcel it never planned for. If you take the guarantee, price against the far end of that column rather than the near end, and treat the nearby orders as the upside.

What Etsy actually promises sellers

Etsy's seller handbook says that from July 30, 2019, items that ship at no charge and shops that guarantee it to US buyers on orders of $35 and above get priority placement in US search results (per etsy.com, checked 2026-07-28). The trade is visibility for margin, and it is a trade, not a gift.

Etsy's own advice is to raise prices

Etsy tells sellers that pricing items to include the shipping cost helps offset it, and gives the example of moving a $35 item to $40 (per etsy.com, checked 2026-07-28). That works cleanly on a mug and awkwardly on a 15 lb carton, so run the arithmetic per product rather than across the shop.

Bundles beat single items under a threshold

A $35 minimum rewards you for selling two things at once, because the second item usually adds far less to the label than it adds to the order. Our combined-order data on the eBay side shows the same effect: a second paperback in the box moved the price down, not up.

Questions sellers ask about the guarantee

Is Etsy's shipping guarantee worth it for a small shop?

It depends entirely on which parcels you send. On our 2026-07-28 lane a mug in a 6 x 5 x 5 in box quoted $8.48, leaving $26.52 of a $35 order, while a 12 x 12 x 12 in carton at 15 lb quoted $17.01 and left $17.99. Light and small can carry it comfortably; heavy and bulky often cannot.

Does Etsy require sellers to offer it?

No, it is opt-in. What Etsy offers in return is placement: its seller handbook says that from July 30, 2019, shops guaranteeing it to US buyers on orders of $35 and above get priority placement in US search results. You are buying visibility with margin.

How much should I raise prices to cover it?

Etsy's own suggestion is to fold the shipping cost into the item price, using the example of a $35 item moving to $40. Work it per product against a real quote, and against your furthest buyer rather than your nearest: our same 5 lb box quoted $10.37 to Philadelphia and $19.14 to Seattle on the same day.

Which orders lose money under the guarantee?

Heavy or bulky items sold close to the threshold, shipped a long way. Those three factors stack. A shop that keeps the guarantee on small goods and prices bulky lines separately usually keeps both the placement and the margin.
