Etsy calculated shipping and why it drifts

Calculated shipping asks Etsy to price each order from your origin, the buyer's address and the size and weight you entered, rather than a flat charge you guessed. It drifts when the carton you actually tape shut is bigger than the item you described, because parcel pricing follows volume at least as hard as it follows weight.

A 5 lb order quoted $13.52, $20.50 and $36.75 depending only on the box it went in.

What Etsy asks you for

  • Who can use it. Etsy says sellers located in the US or Canada who ship with USPS, Global Postal Shipping or Canada Post can use calculated shipping (per help.etsy.com, checked 2026-07-28).
  • What it reads. Etsy describes calculated shipping as using your location, the buyer's location, and the item's size and weight to generate the cost (per the same source).
  • The field people get wrong. Etsy asks for the item size when packed, which it defines as the size after the item has been prepared for packaging but not yet packaged, folded but not boxed (per the same source). That is not the size of the carton you will actually tape shut.
  • How the box gets chosen. Etsy says accurate size and weight are needed so it can work out the box that fits best, and that the order weight combined with the size and weight of that box determines the buyer's postage at checkout (per the same source).
  • Where it stops. If the item cannot ship as a USPS or Canada Post package, Etsy says you add rates manually instead, giving oversized goods and letter mail as examples (per the same source).

Every one of those inputs is a description of the item. None of them is a measurement of your finished parcel, and that gap is where calculated shipping drifts from your receipt.

Why the estimate drifts from the label

Here is the drift, isolated. Same contents, same weight on the scale, same route, same day. Only the carton changed.

Identical 5 lb of contents in three carton sizes, Newark NJ 07102 to Atlanta GA 30303, SMKlog live rates 2026-07-28.
CartonWeight on the scaleCheapest quotedCarrier and service
12 x 10 x 6 in5 lb$13.52UPS Ground Saver
18 x 14 x 10 in5 lb$20.50UPS Ground Saver
24 x 18 x 14 in5 lb$36.75UPS Ground

Nearly three times the price for the same five pounds. Pad an item generously, ship it in the box a supplier sent you, or nest two orders in one oversized carton, and the shipping Etsy quoted from your packed-item measurement stops matching the label you buy. Neither UPS Ground Saver row returned a transit window with its rate, so none is shown.

Measure the carton you really use

The single highest-value ten minutes in an Etsy shop is packing one of each product properly, then writing the finished dimensions and weight on a card taped above the bench. Every profile you set afterwards inherits the accuracy.

Far buyers are the ones that hurt

The same 5 lb box we priced above quoted $10.37 to Philadelphia and $19.14 to Seattle on 2026-07-28. Calculated shipping handles that spread for you, which is exactly the argument for using it rather than a flat charge set from your nearest order.

We are not an Etsy integration

SMKlog has no connection to Etsy, no order import and no fulfillment. Use us the way you would use a second opinion: quote the packed parcel here, compare it against what Etsy told the buyer, and adjust the profile if the two keep disagreeing.

Calculated shipping questions

How does Etsy calculated shipping work?

Etsy says it uses your location, the buyer's location and the item's size and weight to generate a cost, then picks the box that fits and prices the order from the combined weight and size. Sellers in the US or Canada shipping with USPS, Global Postal Shipping or Canada Post are eligible.

Why is Etsy's shipping estimate lower than my label?

Usually the carton. Etsy asks for item size when packed, meaning prepared for packaging but not yet boxed, so a generous carton adds volume Etsy never saw. On our 2026-07-28 lane the same 5 lb quoted $13.52 in a 12 x 10 x 6 in box and $36.75 in a 24 x 18 x 14 in box.

What size should I enter for item size when packed?

Etsy's wording is the size after the item is prepared for packaging but not yet packaged, so a folded garment rather than the mailer it goes into. If your items are rigid or awkward, measure a genuinely packed example and keep the figures written down by the bench.

Can SMKlog set up calculated shipping for me?

No. We have no Etsy integration, no order import and no fulfillment service. What we can do is quote your packed parcel on a live lane so you can see whether the estimate Etsy is showing buyers matches what the label costs.
