Platform-only service

eBay Standard Envelope: what qualifies, and the alternative

eBay Standard Envelope is a platform-only service for flat, light collectibles: trading cards, currency and coins, postcards, stamps, patches, stickers, decals, greeting cards and seeds, up to 3 oz, in an envelope no larger than 6.125 by 11.5 inches and under a quarter of an inch thick. It can only be bought through eBay, so the useful question is what the same cards cost as a regular parcel.

A quarter inch decides it

Most protective packing breaks the thickness rule immediately. Then it is an ordinary parcel.

What qualifies, in eBay's own terms

  • Categories. eBay lists trading cards, currency and coins, postcards, stamps, patches, stickers, decals, greeting cards, and seeds (per ebay.com seller help, checked 2026-07-28).
  • Weight. Up to 3 oz (per the same page).
  • Envelope size. No smaller than 3.5 x 5 inches and no larger than 6.125 x 11.5 inches (per the same page).
  • Thickness. Envelope thickness is uniform, less than 0.25 inches at all points (per the same page).
  • Construction. The envelope contains no clasps, strings, buttons or similar closure devices, and is not enclosed in or made of any plastic material (per the same page).
  • What comes with it. eBay describes integrated tracking, a $20 shipping protection plan on a single order and up to $50 on combined orders (per the same page).

The thickness line is the one that disqualifies most attempts. A quarter of an inch, uniform, is about the thickness of a few top loaders and nothing more. We did not capture eBay's published price for the service, so no figure for it appears on this page.

What the same cards cost as an ordinary parcel

You can only buy the envelope service through eBay, so the useful comparison is the alternative. We described eight top-loaded cards in a rigid mailer to the calculator on 2026-07-28 and printed the answer unedited.

Eight top-loaded cards in a rigid mailer, returned as 20 x 15 x 2 cm at 0.15 kg, Newark NJ 07102 to Atlanta GA 30303, quoted 2026-07-28.
CarrierServicePriceQuoted window
USPSGround Advantage$8.388-9 business days
FedExGround Economy$10.066-7 business days
UPSGround$10.312-3 business days
UPS3 Day Select$15.135-6 business days
UPS2nd Day Air$15.382-3 business days

Note the shape of that mailer: at roughly 2 cm thick it is already eight times the envelope service's quarter-inch ceiling, so this parcel could never have qualified. That is the honest comparison. For a genuinely flat, light card lot inside a plain paper envelope, the platform service is built for exactly that shipment and there is no point pretending otherwise. For anything rigid, thick or heavier than 3 oz, an ordinary parcel is the only route, and $8.38 was where it started on our lane.

Combined orders raise the cover

eBay puts the shipping protection at $20 on a single order and up to $50 on combined ones. If a buyer takes several lots, combining is worth doing for the cover alone, before you count the postage saved.

Rigid protection and the thickness rule fight each other

Everything card sellers do to stop bending adds thickness, and thickness is the exact thing the envelope service caps. Decide which matters more for the card in front of you, and price the parcel route before you assume it is expensive.

We cannot sell you this service

eBay Standard Envelope is bought inside eBay, full stop. SMKlog has no eBay integration and sells standalone US domestic parcel labels, so what we can offer is the comparison and the parcel alternative, not the envelope itself. If you send card lots regularly, our small business shipping costs guide covers the per-label economics behind that choice.

Standard Envelope questions

What can be sent by eBay Standard Envelope?

eBay lists trading cards, currency and coins, postcards, stamps, patches, stickers, decals, greeting cards, and seeds. The shipment must weigh up to 3 oz and travel in an envelope between 3.5 x 5 inches and 6.125 x 11.5 inches.

How thick can an eBay Standard Envelope be?

eBay's rule is that envelope thickness is uniform and less than 0.25 inches at all points. It also states the envelope must contain no clasps, strings, buttons or similar closure devices, and must not be enclosed in or made of any plastic material.

Is eBay Standard Envelope tracked and covered?

eBay describes integrated tracking with the service, a $20 shipping protection plan on a single order, and up to $50 on combined orders. Combining a buyer's lots therefore raises the cover as well as reducing the postage.

What does the same card lot cost as a normal parcel?

Eight top-loaded cards in a rigid mailer quoted $8.38 with USPS Ground Advantage from Newark to Atlanta on 2026-07-28, with UPS Ground at $10.31 for a two to three business day window. That mailer was far too thick to qualify for the envelope service in the first place.
