Combining shipping on eBay, priced properly

Combining shipping means one buyer's several wins travel in one box under one label. On our test lane the difference is stark: three paperbacks sent as three parcels came to $29.73, while the same three in one 2 lb box quoted $8.48.

One box beats three

The saving is real and it is bigger than most sellers guess. It is also easy to overshoot if you upsize the carton.

The saving, in dollars

One buyer, three paperbacks. Sent separately that is three labels; sent together it is one box and one label. We priced both on the same lane on the same day.

Paperbacks from Newark NJ 07102 to Atlanta GA 30303, SMKlog live rates 2026-07-28. Separate-label totals are the single-parcel price multiplied out.

2 books12 x 9 x 4 in2 lb$8.48$19.82$11.34
5 books12 x 10 x 6 in5 lb$13.52$49.55$36.03

The two-book row is the one sellers misjudge. Combining did not merely halve the cost, it came in below the price of a single book on its own, because the second parcel moved the shipment into a box and weight band that happened to price better. The five-book row was cheapest on UPS Ground Saver, which returned no transit window with its rate, so we are not printing one.

How eBay says the mechanism works

  • The buyer starts it. eBay states that if a buyer is purchasing multiple items from you, and they have not already benefited from a shipping discount, they can select Request combined shipping in their shopping cart (per ebay.com seller help, checked 2026-07-28).
  • You have to have switched it on. On the Shipping Preferences page, select Edit beside Allow invoice requests, set requests allowed to yes, choose the time period you are willing to combine payment across, and save (per the same page).
  • Some carts cannot ask. eBay lists cases where combined shipping is unavailable, covering items already reduced in price, listings that already carry shipping at no charge, and listings requiring immediate payment (per the same page).
  • There is a fallback. If a buyer has already paid for shipping, eBay says you can still offer a combined shipping discount by sending a partial refund from Orders (per the same page).

The time period setting is the one people leave at its default and then wonder why a Friday and a Sunday purchase never merged. Set it to match how you actually pack, not to the shortest option in the list.

Quote the combined box before you invoice

The discount you offer is a promise made before you know the number. Thirty seconds with the packed dimensions turns that promise into arithmetic, and the gap between a guess and the real figure is usually larger than the discount itself.

Weight bands are lumpy, so measure the pile

Stacking two orders into one carton can cross into a bigger box and a worse price even as the weight barely moves. Our own ladder shows a 5 lb box at 12 x 10 x 6 in quoting $13.52 while the identical 5 lb in a 24 x 18 x 14 in box quoted $36.75 on the same lane and day.

What we do not do

SMKlog has no eBay integration. We do not read your orders, we do not push tracking back into a listing, and we do not do fulfillment. If you buy a label here, you paste the tracking number into eBay yourself. Buying through eBay Labels uploads tracking automatically instead, which is a genuine convenience worth weighing.

Combined shipping questions

How do I combine shipping on eBay?

Turn on invoice requests first: eBay's help says to open Shipping Preferences, edit Allow invoice requests, set requests allowed to yes and pick the time period you will combine across. The buyer then selects Request combined shipping in their cart, and you send one invoice covering the lot.

How much does combining shipping actually save?

On our 2026-07-28 lane from Newark to Atlanta, one paperback quoted $9.91, so three sent separately would be $29.73. The same three packed into a 12 x 9 x 4 in box at 2 lb quoted $8.48. Five in a 12 x 10 x 6 in box at 5 lb quoted $13.52 against $49.55 sent one by one.

Why can my buyer not request combined shipping?

eBay lists situations where the cart cannot ask, covering items whose price is already reduced, listings that offer shipping at no charge, and listings that require immediate payment. Where the request is blocked, eBay's suggested route is a partial refund from Orders after the buyer has paid.

Does SMKlog connect to my eBay account?

No. There is no integration, no order sync and no fulfillment service here. You quote the packed box, buy one US domestic label as a guest, and copy the tracking number into eBay yourself.
