Composting is worse, not better
The same guidance rules out the compost bin alongside the recycling bin. A coated label breaking down in a compost pile puts its chemistry straight into material destined for soil.
Every parcel that arrives leaves three materials behind: the corrugated carton, the label stuck to it, and, if you printed the label yourself, the backing sheet it peeled away from. The carton is the easy one. The other two are the reason this question keeps getting asked, and the answers below come from a state environmental agency and the label industry's own liner program, both read on 2026-07-29.
Peeling the label off takes four seconds and settles both the recycling question and the privacy one.
The confusion comes from treating the parcel as one object. It is not. A carton is unbleached corrugated board that almost every municipal program takes. A modern parcel label is coated paper printed by heat. A label liner is paper coated with silicone so the adhesive lets go. Those three go three different places.

One shipment therefore produces one clearly recyclable item, one item with a plastic route, and two or three items that belong in the bin. Sorting them takes less time than reading a municipal website, and it keeps the coated paper out of a pulper where it does the most damage.
Direct thermal printing needs no ink. The paper carries a chemical layer that darkens under a hot printhead, and the developer in that layer is usually bisphenol A or bisphenol S. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency puts it plainly: “BPA and BPS are developers that assist in the heat-activated printing process.” Its recycling guidance is equally plain: “We recommend you do not put thermal receipt paper in your recycling or compost bin. BPA and other chemicals embedded in thermal paper can end up in wastewater from recycling plants or minimally contaminate other papers in the recycling stream.” Both were read on 2026-07-29.
The agency also gives the identification test, which works on a label as well as a receipt: “Thermal paper is thin with a slick feel or sheen finish and discolors easily when scratched with a coin or paperclip.” Drag a key across a corner of the label on your next delivery. A gray streak appears within a second on thermal stock, and nothing at all happens on a label run through a laser printer. Warehouse-printed labels are nearly always thermal; labels a small seller printed at home on letter paper are nearly always not.

Contamination is a volume problem. A single label riding into the cart on a box will not wreck a bale, but the habit multiplied across a household year is worth breaking.
Anyone printing their own labels generates a second stream: the glossy sheet the label peels off. That silicone coating is what makes the label release, and it is also what keeps the liner out of an ordinary paper mill, because silicone survives the pulping process and shows up as a defect in the finished sheet.
A route does exist, and it is worth knowing about if you ship at volume. The label industry's Liner Recycling Initiative states that “if the waste release liner is prepared to mill requirements, it will be accepted at one of two Sustana Fiber mills located in De Pere, WI, and Lévis, Quebec for recycling”, and directs “companies that generate paper release liner waste and that are interested in participating in the program” to contact the trade body running it. Two mills on the continent is the measure of how narrow this route is, and the program is built around baled volume from converters and warehouses rather than a shoebox of backing sheets from a spare room.
For a household or a one-person shop, the honest answer is that the liner goes in the trash. The two paths want opposite things from the old label, which is why advice on this reads as contradictory. If the carton is going into the cart, take the label off. If the carton is going back out with something new inside, the label only has to stop being readable.

The scanning reason for covering an old barcode deserves its own line. Sorting equipment reads whatever bars it can see, and a carton wearing two live barcodes can be routed by the wrong one. Municipal recycling programs set their own accepted-materials lists and they differ street by street. The guidance above is the default position of the sources named on the date shown; your hauler's own list is what actually governs the cart at the curb.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency recommends that thermal receipt paper stay out of both the recycling and the compost bin, because the chemicals in the coating end up in mill wastewater or contaminate other paper in the stream, read 2026-07-29. A label printed on ordinary office paper is closer to ordinary paper, but the adhesive or tape holding it down is still a contaminant.

That route is open to companies generating liner waste, not to a home printer with one roll.
Peeling it off is the better habit even where a program tolerates a small label, because it removes the coated paper and your home address in one motion. Tear the patch out of the corrugated board if it will not peel cleanly.

Marginally, and only if you skip the sticky backing. A label printed on office paper and taped down leaves plain paper plus plastic tape rather than a coated face sheet plus a siliconized liner, so there is less to pull out of the stream.
