Label rolls are the ongoing cost, not the machine. Price a year of stock at your real volume before deciding the hardware is the expensive part.
We sell labels, not hardware, so here is the unglamorous answer: if you ship a handful of parcels a month, a label printer is a convenience purchase rather than a saving. USPS itself says regular printer paper works, and a taped paper label scans the same as a thermal one.
If you ship every day, the calculation flips, mostly on time rather than money. Below are the two printer classes, the resolution figure the Postal Service publishes, and what the hardware costs per label at three realistic volumes.
Nothing about a thermal printer changes what a carrier charges. It changes how long packing takes.

Read the first row honestly. At ten parcels a month the machine is costing more per shipment than a sheet of paper and a strip of tape could possibly cost, and that stays true for a long while. At two hundred a month the hardware has become a rounding error and the argument moves entirely to how many seconds each label takes to produce.
The maker lists label widths from 1.57 to 4.1 inches on the wireless unit, which covers the 4 by 6 shipping standard and the small product labels underneath it. If you only ever print parcel labels, width range is not a reason to pay more.

Eleven dollars and fifty-eight cents separated the top and bottom rows on one lane on one day. A seller shipping fifty of these a month is looking at a spread far larger than any printer costs, which is the real argument for comparing carriers on every order rather than optimising the stationery.

Direct thermal burns the image into heat-sensitive stock and needs no consumable beyond the labels themselves. Thermal transfer melts pigment off a ribbon onto the label, so it needs ribbons as well as stock, and the print survives heat and sunlight far better. Shipping labels are overwhelmingly direct thermal because they only have to last a few days.
USPS recommends a printer with a minimum resolution of 203 dots per inch for printing the Intelligent Mail package barcode, per the Parcel Labeling Guide version 3 release 5 on postalpro.usps.com, read 2026-07-28. Both label printers priced on this page output at exactly that figure.
