Four small cartons, one lane. The spread across the whole table is a few dollars, which is the real lesson: under about 3 lb the carrier choice matters less than not overpaying for speed you do not need.

The floor price

Nothing ships for $3

The cheapest quote in this table is $8.88 for an 8 oz box. Tracked parcel service has a floor, and prices advertised below it are almost always letter mail or a flat-rate teaser.

Weight barely moves it

Going from 8 oz to 3 lb changed the cheapest price by less than a dollar on this lane. Box size and service speed do more than the scale does at this end of the market.

Envelope or box

A padded envelope can be cheaper, but it is also what gets crushed and lost. For anything you would mind replacing, the extra dollar for a rigid box is the cheapest protection available.

Common questions

What is the cheapest way to ship a small package?

USPS Ground Advantage took three of the four boxes here, from $8.88 for an 8 oz parcel. UPS Ground Saver was within pennies on the 1 lb box, so it is worth comparing both.

Is a padded envelope cheaper than a box?

Sometimes by a dollar or two, because it is smaller and lighter. It also offers almost no protection, so for electronics, jewellery, or anything fragile the box is the better trade.

How much does it cost to mail a 1 lb package?

$10.75 on this lane and this day for a 9 × 6 × 3 in box. Farther zones cost more; the same box to Los Angeles was quoted on our package price page.

Does first class mail still exist for packages?

For parcels it was folded into USPS Ground Advantage. That is the service quoted here, and it includes tracking end to end.

Can I ship a small package without a scale?

Yes. Describe what it is and SMKlog estimates the packed box and weight for you, then shows the same rates you would get by measuring. You can correct anything before you pay.
