Money flow and label flow travel in opposite directions on the same order.
The Vinted flow keeps the seller out of the postage transaction entirely under normal conditions. The four moves happen in this order.

The Vinted Buyer Protection fee sits on top of the item and the shipping fee at checkout and is also paid by the buyer. Vinted's Selling on Vinted help page states US sellers pay no listing fee and no selling fee, which is the other half of the reason the shipping money never reaches the seller's account.
Three real cases put the postage back on the seller, and only one of them is a Vinted rule. The other two are choices the seller made.
Sellers can offer a bundle discount, and some choose to absorb shipping as part of the incentive. The bundle still travels on one label priced off Vinted's carrier options; the seller just chose to eat the fee out of the sale rather than pass it to the buyer.
An offer that says “shipping included” is a private agreement between the two parties. Vinted still runs the checkout the same way, and the seller compensates by lowering the item price or issuing a partial refund after payment clears.
The label is priced off what the seller declared, so a parcel that weighs more than the listing said risks a label upgrade or a carrier surcharge that Vinted reconciles from the sale. Declaring the packed weight honestly at listing time avoids the whole line.
None of these three flip the default. The default is that the buyer paid shipping when they clicked Buy, and the label the seller drops off was funded from that payment.
A Vinted return works through a claim, not a private mailback. When a buyer opens a case for an item that does not match the listing, Vinted's Buyer Protection process issues the return label; the seller does not pay for it and the buyer does not either. When both parties agree to a return outside a dispute, Vinted's help pages do not fund the postage, and the two sides work the postage out between themselves.
The Buyer Protection fee is charged to the buyer at checkout for every purchase, whether or not a claim is ever opened. That fee is the pool from which Vinted funds the disputed returns, and it is the reason returns handled through the claim system do not add an out-of-pocket cost to either side.
Vinted's built-in labels are the right call for items that fit its declared weight tiers, because the buyer paid the fee and the seller printed the label with zero fuss. Only when the seller offers a Bundle discount that absorbs shipping, or agrees to cover the cost as part of a Make an Offer negotiation. Neither is imposed by Vinted, and the platform's seller fee is $0 on US listings, so the shipping revenue path is fully routed through the buyer.
Vinted quotes the fee off the seller's declared weight when the listing was created. Underweighting the listing is what causes label upgrades to fall on the seller after a sale; declaring the true packed weight up front puts the correct fee in front of the buyer at checkout.
Vinted's Buyer Protection funds the return label when a claim is opened for an item not matching the listing. When both parties agree to a return outside that flow, they arrange and split the postage between themselves, because Vinted's help pages do not fund a private return outside a dispute.
