DHL Express, walk-in

Where to drop off a DHL Express package

DHL has no unstaffed drop box for the public to use in the United States. Its walk-in channel is the DHL Express ServicePoint network — thousands of staffed counters, many of them inside existing retail stores — and it takes a smaller box than a scheduled pickup will. What follows is DHL's own description of that channel and its limits, read from dhl.com on 2026-08-30.

DHL's walk-in option is a person at a counter checking the box, not an unstaffed drop point.

What a DHL ServicePoint actually is

DHL's drop-and-ship page, read 2026-08-30, describes ServicePoints as a network of thousands of locations, including high-street retail stores, built for dropping off a shipment with no appointment needed. Find one through the DHL Express ServicePoint locator by entering a ZIP code, then choose whether to plan the shipment ahead online or have it prepared on the spot — DHL's own page confirms no DHL Express account is required either way.

That last point matters more than it sounds. Some carriers reserve their easiest drop-off channel for account holders; DHL's does not. A first-time shipper with nothing set up in advance can still walk in, hand over the parcel, and have staff build the shipment there.

The walk-in sequence, in DHL's own order

  1. Plan the shipment. DHL's online tools price the route and locate the nearest ServicePoint before anyone leaves the house.
  2. Pay and get a label or a QR code. Paying online produces either a printable label or a code to show at the counter — nothing to print if a phone screen works instead.
  3. Leave the box unsealed. DHL's page is specific about this: “Please do not seal the package, as the contents must be checked by our staff.” Tape it shut ahead of time and a staff member opens it again anyway.
  4. Bring it to the counter and show the label or code. DHL describes the handoff itself as done in seconds once the label or QR code is presented.

A ServicePoint can also build the shipment from nothing: pay in person at the counter and staff prepare it there, still with no account required.

The walk-in size cap sits well under a booked pickup's

A retail counter has a shelf, not a loading dock, and DHL's own limits reflect that. Both figures below come from the same drop-and-ship page, read 2026-08-30.

Standard weight and size ceilings for DHL Express's two consumer channels, as published on DHL's drop-and-ship page and read 2026-08-30. A parcel over either channel's line routes to phone booking with customer service instead.
ChannelWeight ceilingSize ceiling
Walk into a ServicePoint55 lb18.9 × 15.7 × 15.4 in
Book a pickup online or by phone154 lb47.2 × 31.5 × 31.5 in

The gap is not a rounding difference. A parcel that clears a scheduled pickup's ceiling by a wide margin can still be too big to carry into a ServicePoint counter, and the fix is not a bigger box under one arm — it is booking a courier instead. Our DHL pickup guide covers that flow. Whichever channel gets the parcel onto a DHL waybill, the piece limits and oversize charges that follow it in the network are the same ones on our DHL oversized package guide.

One real ServicePoint, so the shape of it is concrete

DHL's own listing for the ServicePoint at 225 W 23rd St in New York, read 2026-08-30, is worth reading as an example rather than a rule — hours and payment options are set per location, not centrally.

  • Open Monday through Friday 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
  • Takes Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, check and Apple Pay. Cash is not accepted at this particular location.

Neither of those is a DHL-wide policy — the FAQ on the drop-and-ship page notes payment options vary by location, and hours are set per ServicePoint. Look up the actual listing for whichever counter is nearest before counting on a specific closing time or payment method.

What this site actually prices

The checkout on this site returns USPS, UPS and FedEx for a parcel moving between two U.S. ZIP codes. DHL Express in the United States runs outbound international shipments only, booked and dropped off directly with DHL, and nothing here resells that. A domestic leg — a package mailed to a forwarder before the international hop, or any move that stays inside the U.S. — prices the ordinary way on the calculator.

DHL drop-off questions

Where can I drop off a DHL package?

At a DHL Express ServicePoint. DHL's own drop-and-ship page, read 2026-08-30, describes thousands of these locations, many inside existing retail stores, taking a shipment over the counter with no appointment needed. DHL does not run a public unstaffed drop box network the way some other carriers do; the walk-in channel is a staffed counter.

Do I need to seal the box before I bring it to a ServicePoint?

No, and DHL asks that it stay open. Its drop-and-ship page, read 2026-08-30, states directly: "Please do not seal the package, as the contents must be checked by our staff." Sealing it ahead of time just means a staff member reopens it at the counter.

How big a package can I walk into a DHL ServicePoint?

Up to 55 lb and no larger than 18.9 by 15.7 by 15.4 inches, per DHL's drop-and-ship page, read 2026-08-30. Anything past that needs a booked pickup instead, which DHL prices to a higher ceiling: up to 154 lb and 47.2 by 31.5 by 31.5 inches before it requires a phone call to customer service.

Do I need a DHL Express account to drop off a package?

No. DHL's drop-and-ship page, read 2026-08-30, states a shipment can be created and paid for online without an account, or a shopper can walk into a ServicePoint and have staff prepare it on the spot.

Can I drop off a DHL package through SMKlog?

No. Our checkout covers USPS, UPS and FedEx on a U.S. ZIP-to-ZIP parcel, and nothing here books a DHL Express shipment. That one is arranged with DHL directly and handed over at a DHL counter.
