Nobody hands out cold-chain packaging for free, so this is always a purchase, and where you make it depends on how many boxes you need. A packaging supplier sells the foam-kit-and-carton combination by the case. A big-box retailer sells a single foam cooler off the shelf. What an insulated box costs today

The spread is not really about cost per box, because the three routes are not selling the same thing. A Uline kit ships assembled, foam already sitting in a 200 lb test outer carton. A Walmart cooler is a standalone container someone else has to box for the carrier. A Uline liner is neither: it is a bubble-and-foil sleeve that only becomes a shipper once you supply the corrugated box.
Packaging suppliers: the kit with the box built in
Uline's insulated foam shipping kits are a molded polystyrene container already seated inside its own 200 lb test carton, foam walls 1 in thick on the smallest kit checked and 1½ in on the mid-size one, sold ready to tape and label. The case size is the part worth reading closely before ordering.
Large kits sell as singles
The case pack shrinks as the kit gets bigger. Several of Uline's larger sizes, 12 x 12 x 11½ in and up, sell one kit at a time, because a warehouse has no reason to bundle something that bulky. Check the case pack on the specific size before assuming a minimum applies.
Volume pricing stacks on top
Every case has its own further break at 2 and at 5 cases. The 12 x 10 x 9 in kit runs 50 USD for one case of 2, 48 USD at two cases, 46 USD at five or more, so a repeat shipper of the same size box keeps shaving the per-kit cost down.
Big-box and hardware stores: one cooler, no case required
A recreational foam cooler works fine as a one-time shipper once it is boxed for the trip, and it is the only route on this page sold one unit at a time with no minimum order.
Walmart carried a 28-quart Lifoam Envirocooler at 4.94 USD and a 45-quart Lifoam Huskee Envirocooler at 18.47 USD on 2026-08-30, both single units, no case pack attached. That undercuts every packaging-supplier kit on this page, because a recreational cooler is not built to the same carton-and-fit standard as a shipping kit and does not need to be boxed twice. Turning a box you already own into an insulated one

What the carriers give away, and what they do not
USPS and UPS both run a no-cost supply program for plain packaging. Neither one extends it to insulated boxes.
USPS's Postal Store lists Cold Chain as a Box Type filter in its free-supplies section, but applying that filter returns zero products, checked 2026-08-30 against the live free-supplies listing for Priority Mail. UPS's own order-supplies page offers boxes, tubes, envelopes, pouches, shipping labels and hazmat paperwork at no charge, also checked 2026-08-30, and none of the categories shown is insulated or cold-chain packaging.
