What shipping to India actually costs, by the kilogram

USPS prices a box to India by weight and by which of its destination groups the country falls into, and India sits in three different groups depending on which USPS product carries the box: Group 10 for First-Class Package International Service and Group 6 for both Priority Mail International and Priority Mail Express International, with the flat rate envelopes and boxes on those two services priced from Group 3 instead. Across those groups, USPS's own retail price list runs from 22.25 USD for an 8-ounce First-Class Package up to 514.45 USD for a 70-pound Priority Mail Express International box, both read from USPS's published price files on 2026-08-30. SMKlog's checkout sells only US-domestic labels, so what follows prices the USPS leg to India directly, and the cheaper domestic hop to a freight forwarder separately.

The run to a US forwarder prices like any other parcel. The mile into India is priced by whichever carrier or forwarder carries it from there.

First-Class Package International Service, India Group 10

This is USPS's cheapest India product and its most limited: 4 lb (64 oz) is the ceiling, and the price only steps up a handful of times across that range rather than scaling smoothly with weight.

USPS retail price list for First-Class Package International Service, price group 10 (India), effective 6/15/2026 and read from usps.com/business/prices/2026/s-fcpis-retail.csv on 2026-08-30. Cost per kg is our own arithmetic on the published price.

USPS's own product page states delivery time varies by destination for this service rather than naming a business-day window, and describes it as carrying electronic delivery confirmation to selected destinations when shipped online, read from usps.com/international/first-class-package-international-service.htm on 2026-08-30.

Priority Mail International, India Group 6

Above the 4-lb First-Class ceiling, this is the cheaper of USPS's two remaining products, at a published 6 to 10 business days.

India's weight-priced rows come from price group 6 and its flat rate options from price group 3, per USPS's own country price group table. Priority Mail Express International, India Group 6

The fastest of the three, published at 3 to 5 business days, and the most expensive at every weight on this page.

USPS retail price list for Priority Mail Express International, effective 6/15/2026 and read from usps.com/business/prices/2026/s-pmei-retail.csv on 2026-08-30. India's weight-priced rows come from price group 6 and its flat rate envelope from price group 3, per USPS's own country price group table. The flat rate envelope prices out of Group 3 rather than the Group 6 the weight table above it uses, which is the only reason it lands a few cents under the lightest weight-priced row instead of above it. It is sized for something flat and light, like a stack of paper, not built to undercut the per-pound table at any real weight. USPS states this service runs 3 to 5 business days and carries the same 200/100 USD coverage language as Priority Mail International, read from usps.com/international/priority-mail-express-international.htm on 2026-08-30.

Why the price per kilogram falls as the box gets heavier

A fixed cost sits underneath every one of these prices: the customs form, the security screening and the international handling do not scale with weight, so that fixed piece gets divided across more kilograms as the box grows. Priority Mail International shows it most cleanly.

Light and expensive per kg

A 1-pound Priority Mail International parcel to India runs 66.25 USD, or 146.06 USD per kilogram once the fixed handling cost is spread across less than half a kilogram of actual goods.

Heavy and cheap per kg

At the 44-pound ceiling, the same product runs 322.05 USD, or 16.14 USD per kilogram — the total price grew not quite fivefold while the weight grew forty-four times over.

The same shape on all three

First-Class Package International Service falls from 98.11 USD to 37.84 USD per kg across its 4-lb range, and Priority Mail Express International falls from 354.28 USD to 16.20 USD per kg across its full range. Every USPS international product prices this way.

Which is cheapest, and what FedEx, UPS and DHL charge

Under 4 lb, First-Class Package International Service beats both other USPS products at every weight on this page — 34.80 USD against Priority Mail International's 71.95 USD for a 2-lb box, for instance. Past 4 lb, only Priority Mail International and Priority Mail Express International remain, and Priority Mail International is cheaper at every weight we priced; the difference is the extra time on the road, 6 to 10 business days against 3 to 5.

USPS is the only one of the four national carriers with a public price file a shopper can read without entering a shipment. UPS's own shipping-costs page names its Calculate Time and Cost tool as the way to get a number for a specific lane rather than pointing to a printed country list, read from ups.com/us/en/support/shipping-support/shipping-costs-rates.page on 2026-08-30, and FedEx and DHL price this same lane through their own account-and-calculator tools. For a courier-specific figure on your exact box, each carrier's own tool is the source; nothing on this page substitutes for one.

The domestic leg, if you route through a forwarder

A common alternative to a direct USPS label is a US-based forwarder or consolidator: SMKlog's checkout prices the ordinary domestic parcel to that address, and the forwarder separately prices its own leg into India, often by consolidated air freight rather than a retail postal rate.

Cheapest rate returned for a box of assorted clothing and gifts, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922 to a forwarder ZIP near JFK, 11430, captured through the SMKlog calculator on 2026-08-30. Each figure is the full checkout total.

18 × 14 × 10 in, 5 kg (11 lb)$14.49
USPS Ground Advantage

That domestic leg is a small fraction of either total, which is the whole appeal of the forwarder route at higher weights: the international mile gets priced separately by whoever the forwarder uses, and it can beat a retail Priority Mail International or Express International label once a consolidator has enough volume to fill a pallet rather than a single box. It can also lose to it on a single light parcel with no consolidation to lean on — SMKlog has no visibility into what any given forwarder charges for that leg, so compare its quote against the tables above before committing. Rules for what a receiver in India can accept without a license, and the duty they will owe, are covered separately in our guide to shipping to India from the USA.

Where these numbers come from

USPS revises this price list several times a year. Treat the figures above as what was published on the date shown and re-check before budgeting a large shipment.

USA to India, asked plainly

How much does it cost to ship a package from the USA to India, per kilogram?

It depends on which USPS product carries the box and how heavy it is. India sits in Group 10 for First-Class Package International Service and Group 6 for both Priority Mail International and Priority Mail Express International, with the flat rate envelopes and boxes on those two services priced from Group 3 instead, and USPS's own retail price list puts a weight-priced Priority Mail International box at 146.06 USD per kilogram at 1 pound and 16.14 USD per kilogram at the 44-pound ceiling. All figures read from USPS's price files on 2026-08-30.

Which USPS service is cheapest for shipping to India?

First-Class Package International Service is cheapest under 4 pounds, at 22.25 USD to 68.65 USD across that range. Above 4 pounds, only Priority Mail International and Priority Mail Express International are available, and Priority Mail International is the cheaper of the two at every weight we priced, though it runs 6 to 10 business days against Priority Mail Express International's 3 to 5.

Why does the per-kilogram price fall as the package gets heavier?

Every USPS international product carries a fixed cost for the customs paperwork and handling regardless of weight, and that fixed cost gets divided across more kilograms as the box gets heavier. A 1-pound Priority Mail International parcel to India works out to 146.06 USD per kilogram; a 44-pound parcel on the same service works out to 16.14 USD per kilogram, even though the total price only grew about fivefold for a weight increase of forty-four times.

Do FedEx, UPS or DHL publish a flat per-kilogram rate to India?

No. UPS's own shipping-costs page directs shippers to its Calculate Time and Cost tool for a specific lane rather than a printed country list, and FedEx and DHL price international air shipments the same account-and-calculator way. USPS is the only one of the four with a public price file a shopper can read without entering a shipment.

Is shipping to a freight forwarder cheaper than mailing straight to India?

The US-domestic leg to a forwarder is far cheaper than any direct international label: our own capture on 2026-08-30 returned $8.17 for a 2-kilogram box and $14.49 for a 5-kilogram box from Berkeley Heights, NJ to a forwarder ZIP near JFK. That is not the full cost, though — the forwarder or consolidator then prices its own leg into India, and that price is set by the forwarder you pick, not by SMKlog.
