Forget the marketing pages. We put identical packed boxes through both networks at ten weights and wrote down what checkout wanted. FedEx actually edges UPS at 15 lb by fifteen cents — the only rung it wins — which tells you how hard these two shadow each other.

Boxes grow with the weight, from a 1 lb parcel near 10 by 8 by 4 inches to a 50 lb carton near 24 by 18 by 14, matching how real shipments pack out. FedEx sat out the lightest rungs in this data, which itself is useful to know if you ship small.

Weight only tells half of it. We ran fresh quotes out of Newark, NJ 07102 to eight cities at 20 lb and 50 lb, and the winner moves with the miles as much as the pounds. At 20 lb, FedEx Ground Economy took five of the eight cities and UPS Ground Saver took the other three, every 20 lb margin under four dollars. At 50 lb, USPS returned no rate at all on any of these eight lanes — UPS and FedEx split that market between them — and UPS won all eight, with the widest gap landing not on the longest haul but on the shorter box to Chicago.

FedEx Ground Economy won five of the eight cities at 20 lb — Hoboken, Philadelphia, Dallas, Los Angeles and Seattle — each by less than a dollar. UPS Ground Saver won the other three: Atlanta by 22¢, Denver by close to a dollar twenty, and Chicago by nearly four dollars, the widest 20 lb margin on the grid. At 50 lb the flipping stops entirely: UPS Ground beat FedEx Ground Economy on all eight cities, and the biggest gap in dollars wasn't the transcontinental box to Los Angeles or Seattle — it was the shorter box to Chicago, $47.42 against $62.08. Both tables hold each carrier's cheapest quote, not its only one. FedEx Ground bid on five of the eight 20 lb lanes and always above Ground Economy: $34.72 to Atlanta, $40.43 to Dallas, $49.38 to Denver and $55.00 to Los Angeles and Seattle. At 50 lb it bid on all eight, $36.83 to Hoboken and Philadelphia through $113.53 to Los Angeles and Seattle, while UPS 3 Day Select ran from $34.79 on the nearest lane out to $142.70 on the two farthest.

Not quite a clean sweep this time: FedEx grabbed the 15 lb rung out of Newark by fifteen cents, then UPS took back every other row. Look at the shape of it: pennies apart through the middle weights, then a widening gap that tops ten dollars once cartons hit 50 lb. A different box or a different week can reorder any row, so the only comparison that matters is the one you run on your own shipment.
Full-speed FedEx carries a premium
Regular FedEx Ground appeared from 15 lb up and always cost more than its economy sibling: $29.09 against $19.63 on the 15 lb Newark box. If your date is flexible, that spread is pure savings.
Distance punishes FedEx harder here
Out of Newark the 50 lb gap was about eleven dollars; from Los Angeles it grew to close to seventeen, $80.12 versus $96.71. Heavy plus far is where this matchup stops being close in our snapshot.
