Ground Saver is the cheapest tier UPS sells and Ground Economy is FedEx's answer to it, and on 2026-08-10 they chased each other almost to a draw: seven identical boxes, four rungs to FedEx, three to UPS, six of the seven finishing nearly even. The outlier was a big 24 × 20 × 16 in carton, which FedEx priced at $65.41 against $76.76 at UPS. Every figure below is the full checkout amount, and the carrier wording carries the same date.

Read the two Dallas rows together: same 25 pounds, same lane, and the step up in carton size lifted UPS Ground Saver from $33.15 to $76.76 while FedEx Ground Economy climbed from $34.39 to $65.41. Both networks price mid-size boxes by volume once it outruns the scale, and they do not do it identically, which is where the only real daylight between these products showed up. On the compact boxes the verdict is duller and more useful: whichever tier your quote screen ranks first is probably right, because the margin is lunch money.
“UPS Ground Saver transit times are typically comparable to UPS Ground, plus approximately one to two additional business days,” and “packages may be delivered by UPS or the USPS,” with photo confirmation only on the parcels UPS itself delivers. Delivery days generally run Monday through Saturday (ups.com, read 2026-08-10).
“Typically, delivery takes 2 to 7 business days, depending on the distance from the package's origin to its destination,” for residential parcels up to 70 lb and 130 inches of length plus girth, with delivery available Monday through Sunday (fedex.com, read 2026-08-10).
Sunday belongs to FedEx: its economy tier lists all seven days while UPS stops at Saturday. PO Boxes belong to UPS: Ground Saver reaches U.S. PO Boxes and APO, FPO and DPO addresses because eligible packages ride to the post office for the last leg.
Both products exist for the same customer: a residential parcel that can trade a day or two for a lower bill. UPS renamed its version from SurePost, FedEx renamed its version from SmartPost, and the SurePost and SmartPost guides cover what survived each rebrand.
Flip a coin, then let the quote screen call it. Our small boxes came back nearly even on the two tiers, inside the noise of any weekly repricing. FedEx itself calls 1-10 lb the ideal Ground Economy weight, and that is the band where the two shadow each other tightest.
Get both numbers before taping anything. The 24 × 20 × 16 in box split the tiers $65.41 against $76.76, and on boxes that size the smarter move is often stepping up to plain UPS Ground, which beat both economy tiers on that exact carton.
A PO Box, APO or FPO destination rules FedEx out of this matchup by UPS's own capability list. A doorstep that needs a Sunday arrival rules UPS out by its Monday-through-Saturday line. Neither tier is built for a deadline with an hour on it.
Both carriers revise these pages and reprice these tiers without notice. The quotes and rules above are what stood on 2026-08-10; your own quote on your own date is the number that counts.

Close to it on shorter lanes, but not on long ones. Our Phoenix test box carried a 7-8 business day window on FedEx Ground Economy against an estimated 5 business days on UPS Ground Saver, quoted 2026-08-10. To Chicago the two sat one day apart.
On the UPS side it can be either network: the Ground Saver page states that packages may be delivered by UPS or the USPS, read 2026-08-10. That handoff is also why Ground Saver reaches U.S. PO Boxes and APO, FPO and DPO addresses. The FedEx Ground Economy page read the same day does not name the final-mile operator.
FedEx lists Monday through Sunday delivery for Ground Economy, while UPS states Ground Saver delivery days generally occur Monday through Saturday. Both statements read from the carriers' pages on 2026-08-10, so a parcel that must land on a Sunday points to FedEx here.
FedEx publishes Ground Economy limits of 70 lb and 130 inches of length plus girth, and calls 1-10 lb the ideal package weight, read 2026-08-10. UPS keeps the Ground Saver equivalents in its service terms rather than on the overview page, and our checkout simply stops offering the tier when a box falls outside them.
