Shipping to Nigeria: the allowance, and what it will not cover
Nigeria now lets a low-value consignment through without duty, and the number attached to it is 300 United States dollars. The catch is not the value. Count the parcels, not the pounds
The duty relief is rationed by the number of shipments a person receives in a year, which makes timing part of the packing decision.
The relief, as the customs board set it out
The Nigeria Customs Service Board announced a de minimis threshold in a release dated 7 September 2025, taking effect the following day. A de minimis threshold is the value beneath which imported goods are released without customs duties and related taxes. Nigeria had not published one before.

Read the last two rows together and the practical shape appears. The allowance is a yearly ration held by the person receiving the goods, not a property of each parcel, so four separate boxes at 290 dollars each land clean while the fifth does not. Splitting one order across five shipments to stay under the line therefore costs more than sending it as one. And the exclusion at the bottom means the relief never rescues an item that was inadmissible in the first place, however little it is worth.
Hardware of all kinds
That is the entire entry, word for word, on the postal country listing for Nigeria. It is the shortest prohibition in the country conditions and by some distance the widest, and it is the one that surprises people: a padlock, a set of hinges, a socket set or a box of screws mailed to a relative running a workshop is prohibited matter, not a declaration problem.

Three restrictions that need a document
Medicines
Proprietary preparations are caught alongside prescription drugs, and penicillin, streptomycin and similar substances require a license. A box of over-the-counter remedies is not the neutral gift it looks like.
Gold and gemstones
Precious stones and manufactured gold, platinum or silver are admitted only up to a value of five francs. The unit is archaic and the ceiling is effectively nil, so treat jewelry as unmailable on this lane.
The five-franc clause is a survival from an older postal convention rather than a current currency figure, and no conversion makes it generous. Anything worth sending is worth more than the limit permits, which puts jewelry, bullion and loose stones outside the postal channel entirely.

That is a reason to keep the declared contents modest, to photograph the packing, and to think hard before putting a laptop or a phone in a postal parcel at all.
