Ordinary parcels to Canada price online here. A laptop with its cell installed is the exception, and Buffalo is as far as its label reaches.
The domestic leg, quoted
We ran the boxed laptop — original retail carton, 16 × 12 × 3 in, 6 lb — through checkout on 2026-08-21, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922 to Buffalo's 14201, the ZIP where border-bound freight changes hands. Past that point a domestic label has no force; the Niagara crossing is its own booking.
| Carrier and service | Price | Estimated transit |
|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage | $10.37 | 2-3 business days |
| UPS Ground Saver | $10.46 | about 4 business days |
| FedEx Ground Economy | $11.68 | 4-5 business days |
| UPS Ground | $12.30 | 3-4 business days |
| USPS Priority Mail | $14.15 | 2-3 business days |
USPS Ground Advantage took the lane at $10.37, nine cents under UPS Ground Saver — on a hop this short the ground products all but tie, and even Priority Mail stays under fifteen dollars.
The number that actually gates a laptop into Canada
USPS's Individual Country Listing for Canada, read 2026-08-21, sets two duty-free ceilings rather than singling out laptops by name: goods valued under 20 Canadian dollars are exempt from duty and excise tax, and gift shipments valued under 60 Canadian dollars carry the same exemption. Neither line was ever going to hold a laptop.
Twenty dollars covers almost nothing
The ordinary-goods exemption is aimed at samples and low-value items, not electronics. A laptop declared honestly clears it by a wide margin in the wrong direction.
Sixty dollars as a gift does not change that
Marking the customs form "gift" raises the exemption line, but only to 60 Canadian dollars. A used laptop's fair resale value is almost always higher, so the gift label does not avoid duty on this item.
Canada's own border services set the bill
USPS's listing states the exemption thresholds; it does not set the duty rate itself. What a laptop actually owes on entry is fixed by Canada's own customs schedule at the time.
The carton against Canada's ceilings
For Canada, USPS grants Priority Mail International parcels up to 66 lb on the scale, 79 inches of length, and 108 inches of combined length and girth — figures read from the listing on 2026-08-21.
| Measurement | This laptop carton | Priority Mail Intl to Canada |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 6 lb | 66 lb ceiling |
| Length + girth | 46 in | 108 in ceiling |
That leaves the carton 62 spare inches on the combined figure and 60 spare pounds on the scale. Nothing about size will hold this shipment up; the duty-free thresholds above will.
The part the sender decides
Declare the real value on the customs form rather than reaching for the 20 or 60 dollar exemption line — a laptop is never going to fit under either, and understating it risks the package being held or reassessed at the border. Keep the battery in the machine; pulled out and packed loose it becomes a different, harder shipment. And remember that a Canadian customs officer assesses the box's whole declared contents — charger, tablet and accessories included — not the laptop line alone.

Common questions
How much does it cost to ship a laptop to Canada?
Getting the box to the border is ordinary domestic shipping: our 2026-08-21 capture priced a 16-inch boxed laptop at $10.37 to $14.15, Berkeley Heights, NJ to Buffalo's border gateway ZIP. SMKlog's online international labels cover Canada, the UK, Germany and Australia; other destinations are not sold here.
Does a laptop clear Canada's duty-free import value?
No. USPS's Individual Country Listing for Canada states that goods valued under 20 Canadian dollars are exempt from duty and excise tax, and that gift shipments under 60 Canadian dollars carry the same exemption. A laptop worth even a fraction of its original price sits well above both lines, so plan for Canadian duty and tax on the shipment rather than around avoiding it.
Is a laptop carton anywhere near Canada's postal size ceiling?
Not close. Boxed at 16 x 12 x 3 inches, a 16-inch laptop carries 46 inches of length plus girth against the 108-inch ceiling Priority Mail International allows for Canada, and its 6 lb barely registers against the 66-lb cap.
Is a gift shipment treated differently?
Only up to the 60 Canadian dollar line USPS's Canada listing states for gifts, which a laptop clears in a fraction of a second. Above that figure a gift shipment owes the same duty and tax as a purchased one; marking the customs form "gift" does not exempt an electronics-value item.
Why does a laptop need review when Canada sells at checkout?
Because the border is open here and the cell is not. Canada is one of the four countries our checkout sells online, but our own rule keeps a device with an installed lithium battery on domestic ground, so the identical carton carrying something without a cell in it prices straight through to Toronto. On the domestic run the battery is routine: the leg moves on ground service with the UN3481 installed-battery marking, which SMKlog's checkout applies on its own. And Canada's USPS listing, unlike Germany's, prints no lithium-battery bar of its own.
