If you ship USPS parcels every week, own a scale, and do not mind holding an account, the cheapest sensible answer is a zero-markup reseller. We would rather you read that here than discover it after paying us.

What Pirate Ship publishes about itself
Straight from pirateship.com on 2026-08-22. We have quoted the load-bearing phrases rather than restating them, since the whole comparison turns on what the company says it charges.

- Getting started means creating a free account, with the site noting

- Two carriers are presented: USPS, with Commercial Pricing® and Priority Mail Cubic®, plus Simple Export Rate® on international parcels, and UPS.
Take that at face value, because there is no reason not to. A reseller passing carrier commercial pricing through untouched will land at the commercial tier, and the commercial tier is published, so anybody can check it.
What the commercial tier actually is
USPS prints the commercial column in Notice 123. Below are Ground Advantage commercial prices at four weights, shown for a near zone and a far one, so the underlying pool of prices is visible rather than implied.

Anybody selling USPS labels without a markup is selling from that column. It follows that on a plain domestic USPS parcel, a zero-markup vendor will usually come in under a vendor whose charge is folded into the rate, and we are the second kind. That is the concession, stated once and not hedged.
Our all-in price on a real box
So that the trade-off is measurable rather than rhetorical, here is a standard 5 lb carton on a medium-length lane. Each figure is what the card gets charged, our part included, with nothing to add afterwards.

Four of those five rows sit inside eighty cents of each other, which is the interesting part. USPS Ground Advantage undercut UPS Ground by three cents this time and came back with the faster window besides: 2-3 business days against 3-4. A late-July pull on this lane at the same 5 lb weight returned the same $14.02 against a 5-6 business day window, so the price has sat still while the estimate tightened.
Other alternatives to Pirate Ship
Pirate Ship is not the only free-to-start option, and it is worth seeing what the subscription platforms actually charge before assuming a plan is the wrong move. Every figure below came off each vendor's own site on 2026-08-22; non-carrier fees are printed as plain numbers rather than dollar signs so they cannot be mistaken for a carrier rate.

Read those three against Pirate Ship's zero-fee model and a pattern shows up: the platforms with a published price are all selling operations software, not cheaper postage. ShipStation, Stamps.com and Shippo each get their own page here with the full break-even math. SMKlog sits outside that group entirely: no plan to buy one label, described above, with the live carton price in the table above.
The three things we do that they do not
Every one of these is checkable against their site and ours. None of them is a criticism; they are simply different product decisions.
- No signup for the first quotes. Pirate Ship asks for a free account before you see rates. Our first three quotes need no account and checkout runs as a guest, which matters mostly for a one-off shipment at an awkward hour.
- FedEx appears in the list. Their site presents USPS and UPS. Ours quotes USPS, UPS and FedEx together, and on the carton above the FedEx row finished fourth of five at 79 cents above the cheapest.
- You can price a box you have not measured. Describe the item and our estimator produces dimensions and a weight before the rate call, which is the whole point of shipping without a scale. If you already own a scale and a tape, that advantage is worth nothing to you.
There is a fourth difference worth naming because it cuts against us as well as for us: anything palletized, crated or oversized goes through our freight review instead of straight to checkout. That is slower than a self-service label and it is deliberate.
Who this page is for
Somebody selling one thing on a marketplace, moving a box for a relative, or clearing a garage. No scale, no routine, no appetite for another login, and a genuine need to see what FedEx charges alongside the other two.
Cubic pricing is a real edge
Priority Mail Cubic prices small dense parcels by volume instead of weight and can beat weight-based rates badly on the right box. Their site lists it. Our cubic pricing explainer covers when the box shape qualifies.
Pirate Ship compared honestly
Is Pirate Ship cheaper than SMKlog?
On a plain USPS or UPS domestic label, usually yes. Their site states they add no markup and are paid by the carriers, which puts them at the published commercial tier, while our charge sits inside the rate we show. We would rather write that down than argue with it.
Then why use SMKlog at all?
Three reasons, each checkable. The first three quotes need no account, FedEx is quoted alongside USPS and UPS, and a parcel can be priced from a description when there is no scale in the house.

For a 12 x 10 x 6 in carton running Berkeley Heights to Atlanta on 2026-08-22, live rates came back between $13.52 and $19.94 depending on service, with four of the five rows inside eighty cents. Those prices are complete, with our charge already inside them.
What are good alternatives to Pirate Ship?
ShipStation, Stamps.com and Shippo are the usual shortlist, and each publishes a plan ladder where Pirate Ship has none. The alternatives table above prices all three as of 2026-08-22.
