A full 1Z number pasted straight from a shipping confirmation email or the label itself is the normal path, and it works whether the shipment is still moving or already sitting on a porch. A missed first delivery attempt leaves a paper trail even when the original 1Z number has gone missing, and UPS's own delivery-notice page is direct about what to do with it.

That notice, which UPS calls an InfoNotice, is left after an unsuccessful first attempt: “Sorry, we missed you. Your driver left a delivery notice because their first attempt at delivering or picking up your package was unsuccessful.” Its reference number goes into the same ups.com/track box as a 1Z number and returns the same result — current status, and any boxes the driver checked on the notice about where the package might be or when the next attempt is planned. This does not require a lost original number; it works the moment a notice exists, and it is a different situation from having no number at all, which our general no-tracking-number guide covers across all three carriers.

Notice there is no status literally called “In Transit” on UPS's own list — the closest published line is Shipped/On the Way, and it covers the whole middle stretch of a shipment's life, including long, quiet gaps on cross-country lanes where the next scan only happens at the destination hub. The Transferred to Post Office for Delivery line above is not a rare edge case on UPS's cheapest residential ground tier. UPS's low-cost Ground Saver service, the successor to what UPS called SurePost, is built to hand certain shipments to USPS for the final leg rather than complete every delivery with a UPS driver.
When that handoff happens, expect the tracking page to show the transfer status, then go quiet on ups.com until USPS scans the package for its own final-mile delivery. That is a scan gap caused by a network change, not a lost package, and it resolves itself once USPS records the drop.
