Tracking packages inside the Shop app

Shop, the buyer-facing app from Shopify, pulls in orders from a connected email account or a Shop Pay purchase and shows them on one tracking map instead of a dozen separate carrier tabs. The part that trips people up is that it can only display a shipment once a tracking number exists on the order — no number, no map, regardless of who the merchant is. Shop's and Shopify's own help pages below were read 2026-08-30.

How an order gets into the app in the first place

Shop's own help center describes two ways a shipment ends up in the app, and neither requires a buyer to type in a number by hand.

“Orders populate automatically from connected email accounts or Shop Pay purchases.”

Shop Help Center, Delivery tracking, help.shop.app/en/shop/delivery-tracking, read 2026-08-30.

Connecting a Gmail or Outlook account lets Shop scan for shipping-confirmation-style emails and pull the tracking details out on its own; a Shop Pay checkout adds the order automatically because Shop already sat inside that transaction. Either way, once an order is in, its tracking number opens a map with the package's approximate location, the store name, order status and a delivery date estimate that moves as the shipment does. That map is app-only — Shop's help center states “you can track deliveries only in the Shop app. Delivery tracking isn't available on the Shop website.” A tracking number can also be pasted in manually for a shipment that never populated on its own.

Why an order shows nothing

This is the complaint that sends most people searching for how Shop tracking works in the first place, and Shopify's own merchant documentation names the cause directly.

“Add a valid tracking number and shipping carrier when you fulfill an order” — without it, “customers won't receive shipping updates through Shop.”

Shopify Help Center, Delivery tracking with Shop, help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/shop/delivery-tracking, read 2026-08-30.

Shop is a display layer sitting on top of whatever tracking number the merchant's fulfillment system produces. If an order was marked fulfilled in Shopify with no carrier or tracking number attached — a common shortcut on a manual or drop-ship order — Shop has nothing to build a map from, and the order simply sits with no shipping status regardless of whether the parcel is actually moving. This is the same underlying gap our no-tracking-number guide covers for carrier tracking generally; inside Shop specifically, the fix is always the same one and it sits with the seller, not the buyer.

The merchant side: what actually has to happen at fulfillment

Track with Shop needs nothing turned on to function; Shopify confirms it ships active out of the box.

QuestionWhat Shopify says
Is it on by default“Track with Shop is activated by default for all Shopify stores.”
What triggers a buyer's tracking to appearAdding “a valid tracking number and shipping carrier when you fulfill an order” in the Shopify admin
Does an outside-order still work“Customers can still use Shop to track any order with a valid tracking number, including from your store” — the requirement is the number, not where the label came from
What a merchant controlsA checkout toggle, “Show a link for customers to track their order with Shop”, which only shows or hides the link on the order status page

So a label bought here at SMKlog, at a different label service, or straight from a carrier account all reach a buyer's Shop app the same way: the tracking number and carrier need to land on the Shopify order at the point it is marked fulfilled. Paste it in and the buyer's existing Shop app picks it up on its own; leave it off and the app has nothing, no matter how good the actual delivery is going.

Shop app tracking questions

How does the Shop app know what to track?

Two ways, per Shop's own help center. Orders populate automatically from connected email accounts or Shop Pay purchases, and a shipment can also be added by pasting in tracking information manually if it never shows up on its own.

Why does an order show nothing in the Shop app?

Almost always a missing tracking number. Shopify's merchant documentation states that customers won't receive shipping updates through Shop unless the store adds a valid tracking number and shipping carrier when the order is fulfilled. No number attached, no map, no matter how the order was placed.

What does the Shop app actually show once tracking is attached?

A map with the package's approximate location in transit, the store name, current order status, shipping updates, and a delivery date estimate that updates as the shipment moves. Shop's own help center states plainly that delivery tracking isn't available on the Shop website, only inside the app.

Is Track with Shop something a merchant has to turn on?

No, it is on by default. Shopify states Track with Shop is activated by default for all Shopify stores, and a merchant only interacts with a checkout toggle to show or hide the tracking link on the order status page, not to enable the underlying feature.

Does a label bought outside Shopify still show up in a buyer's Shop app?

Only if the number makes it back into the order. Shopify's own documentation ties Shop tracking to a tracking number and carrier entered at fulfillment in the Shopify admin, so a label purchased outside Shopify has to be pasted back into that order before Shop has anything to show the buyer.
