How to ship luggage ahead of a trip, or home

Sending a bag separately, instead of carrying it through an airport, comes down to the same three decisions whether the box is going ahead of you to a destination or back to your own front door afterward: what goes in the box, how it is addressed, and whether someone needs to be there to sign for it. A 30 x 20 x 12 in, 17 lb boxed suitcase from Berkeley Heights, NJ to Orlando, FL quoted $45.00 to $70.33 on 2026-08-19.

Every service on this route landed inside a 4 to 6 business day window, which is the number to build your lead time around: mail on Friday and the box is waiting by the following Wednesday to Friday. A carry-on-sized bag on a shorter lane prices well under the checked-bag figures here — run your own dimensions and ZIP codes in the calculator for the exact number.

Sending it ahead: get the address right before the box ships

A box addressed to a hotel, a rental, or a relative's house needs the recipient's cooperation, not just a shipping label. None of this is a carrier rule — it is a courtesy each address extends, and it can be refused.

Call ahead

Ask whether the hotel front desk, the vacation rental host, or the relative will actually accept a package before you arrive, and how many days early they are willing to hold it. Front desks routinely decline packages that show up weeks before check-in.

Put your travel dates on the label

Name, arrival date, and a phone number in the address block gives the person holding it something to match against when you show up asking for a box with no name they recognize on the guest list yet.

Or skip the address entirely

Ship it to yourself with the carrier holding it instead of delivering it to a building. That trades a hotel's goodwill for a pickup counter with your ID, covered next.

Have it held for pickup instead

Both major networks let a box wait at a staffed location instead of a residential address, but the two set it up differently. Read from each carrier's own page on 2026-08-19.

FedEx: pick a location up front

FedEx offers Hold for Pickup as a choice made when the label is created, and separately lets you redirect a package that has already shipped to a hold location by tracking it. Either way, FedEx states “FedEx will hold your package for up to 7 days.” After that it goes back to the shipper. Read 2026-08-19.

UPS: the receiver requests it after shipping

UPS's own support page describes tracking the package after it ships, then choosing “Hold at UPS Location” before the first delivery attempt — a step for whoever is receiving it, not something the sender sets when buying the label. UPS notes eligibility depends on shipper restrictions, service level, and package size or weight. Read 2026-08-19.

Bring ID either way

A pickup counter checks the name on the label against a photo ID before handing a box over, the same as any held package. Address it to yourself exactly as your ID reads and there is nothing to sort out at the counter.

Shipping it home instead of carrying it back

The trip home works the same way in reverse, with one practical difference: you are usually packing the box at a hotel desk or a relative's kitchen table, not your own.

Find a box before you need one

A hotel front desk or a shipping-store location near where you are staying is the easiest source. Buying a box the morning you fly out, after checkout, is the most common way this plan falls apart.

Ship it to arrive after you, not before

Unlike the outbound leg, nobody needs to be home the exact hour it lands — a box waiting on a porch for a day or two is a smaller problem than a box waiting at a hotel desk for a week. Ground service is the cheap, unhurried choice for this direction.

Empty what you can before boxing

Wear the heaviest shoes on the plane and box the rest. Lighter contents pull the packed weight down, and a lighter bag is one less thing to manage through security on the way home.

Common questions

How early should I ship luggage ahead of a trip?

A week of lead time covers a standard ground service with room for a slow day. Our own Berkeley Heights, NJ to Orlando route quoted 2026-08-19 came back with 4 to 6 business days across every service, so a box mailed the Friday before a Saturday flight lands with a day or two to spare.

How do I address a box so it is waiting for me at a hotel?

Call the hotel first. Most will hold a package at the front desk if the guest name and arrival date are on the label and they agreed to accept it, but that is a courtesy each property sets its own limits on, not a shipping service term. Confirm before you tape the box shut.

Can I have the box held for pickup instead of delivered to an address?

Yes, on both major networks, though the mechanics differ. FedEx lets a sender choose Hold for Pickup when the shipment is created, and separately lets anyone redirect a package already in transit to a hold location; FedEx says it will hold a package for up to 7 days before returning it to the shipper. UPS's hold option is requested by the receiver after the label ships, by tracking the package and choosing to hold it at a UPS location before the first delivery attempt.

Should I box the suitcase or ship it as is?

Box it. A bare case takes belt-sorter damage to its shell, wheels and handles, and some carrier fee schedules charge more for packaging that is not fully enclosed in cardboard. A box also gives you room to pad the corners, which a soft duffel needs even more than a hard shell does.

What does it cost to ship a suitcase ahead?

$45.00 to $70.33 for a 30x20x12 in, 17 lb boxed checked suitcase from Berkeley Heights, NJ to Orlando, FL, quoted 2026-08-19. Shorter routes and lighter carry-on bags price lower; run your own two ZIP codes for a live number.
