Every major carrier's consumer battery allowance, domestic or international, tops out around 100 Wh for a lithium-ion cell mailed on its own, and a common e-bike pack sits between 360 and 900-plus Wh. We read FedEx, UPS and DHL's own current battery pages on 2026-08-19 to see how each one treats a shipment that far past its own line, and ran a real pack through our own checkout toward an international forwarder to see how far it gets.

What FedEx's own page says

FedEx's how-to-ship-batteries page, read 2026-08-19, sets the Section II consumer allowance at a lithium-ion or polymer battery of no more than 100 Wh, with no single cell over 20 Wh. The same page's lithium battery flow chart lists a prohibition on offering UN3090 and UN3480 — a lithium metal or lithium-ion battery shipped by itself, which is exactly the category a spare e-bike pack falls into — under that Section II route. For anything outside that, the page points shippers to the FedEx Logistics lithium battery shipping guide for international air and ocean requirements and to the FedEx international hotline to confirm acceptability for a specific destination.

What UPS and DHL each add

UPS

UPS's how-to-ship-batteries page, read 2026-08-19, does not print its own international watt-hour ceiling. It directs shippers to the federal 49 CFR Lithium Battery Guide for Shippers and the IATA Battery guidance document, and names the UPS Hazardous Materials Support Center, 1-800-554-9964, as the line for anything past a routine domestic case.

DHL

DHL's battery-shipping page, read 2026-08-19, states that lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries are classified as dangerous goods by IATA, and that the shipper carries legal responsibility for meeting the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations: the correct UN number, an IATA dangerous-goods label, a safety data sheet, and a battery state of charge held at 30 percent or less for air movement. The page publishes no watt-hour ceiling of its own and does not mention e-bike batteries by name.

What the three add up to

None of the three describes a retail path for a battery this far past 100 Wh. All three point past their own consumer pages toward a hazardous-materials desk, a certified forwarder, or a dangerous-goods guide, which matches what our own checkout returned below.

Rather than assume the border made the difference, we ran the same spare pack used on our domestic e-bike battery page toward an international forwarder instead of a plain domestic address: 8 lb, packed in a 14 × 5 × 4 in box, described as a spare 48V 14Ah lithium-ion e-bike battery pack, no bike, from Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922 to a Miami, FL 33101 forwarder hub. Captured against production on 2026-08-19.

Zero rates came back, on both the parcel and freight sides, the same outcome our domestic guide found on a purely domestic lane. That is the useful fact here: the block sits on the watt-hour figure, not on where the box is ultimately headed, so routing the shipment toward a forwarder does not clear it. A battery this size needs a dangerous-goods account before geography enters the picture at all.

What actually moves a shipment like this

A carrier's hazmat desk

FedEx, UPS and DHL each maintain a dangerous-goods contract path separate from their consumer sites. That path expects UN38.3 test documentation for the cell, a dangerous-goods declaration, and typically a standing account rather than a one-off label purchase.

An IATA-certified forwarder for air

Businesses that export e-bike batteries in volume generally route through a freight forwarder holding its own dangerous-goods certification, which absorbs the paperwork the carrier's own consumer counter cannot process.

Ocean freight under IMDG for bulk

A single spare pack rarely justifies a sea shipment on its own, but a manufacturer or reseller moving many packs at once typically ships that volume by ocean under the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code, arranged through a licensed forwarder rather than a parcel carrier.

None of the three is a job for a domestic parcel checkout, ours included. If the battery is staying inside the bike rather than traveling alone, the shipment is a different regulatory class, UN3481 instead of UN3480, but our own checkout still routes an installed pack over 100 Wh to manual review rather than an instant rate, so it is worth checking that path directly rather than assuming installed solves the problem.

Not through a retail counter.
