The marking the rule asks for
Federal law puts airsoft in with toy and look-alike guns, and the point of the whole rule is that anyone looking at the thing can tell it is not real. The marking is the gun's, not the box's, so it belongs on the item before it ever goes near a shipping label.

The same guidance lists what an approved marking looks like, and there is more than one accepted form. A gun that is already sold in the United States usually carries one of them from the factory; the job at shipping time is to leave it in place.

One carve-out is worth knowing. The guidance excludes traditional B-B, paint-ball and pellet-firing air guns from the marking requirement, which is why a metal pellet pistol and a spring airsoft pistol are not treated the same way. It does not follow that the excluded guns ship freely; it only means the orange-marking rule is aimed elsewhere.
Where the carriers stop
A marked airsoft gun moves inside the country as an ordinary parcel. The wall goes up at the border, and the carrier that spells this out plainly is UPS.

Read that the way it is written. Nothing there blocks a domestic airsoft parcel, and the licensed-shipper contract that governs real firearm products is a separate program aimed at dealers and manufacturers. The practical takeaway is a split: keep the shipment inside the United States and it behaves like any long box; try to send it abroad and it needs a contract UPS does not hand to a private sender, on top of whatever the receiving country allows through its own door.
State and city law is the other layer, and it does not live on any carrier page. A handful of jurisdictions regulate the sale, transfer or age of buyers for imitation firearms more tightly than the federal marking rule does. An electric gun ships with its pack, a gas gun ships empty of green gas or CO2 cartridges, and either way pick a ground service rather than air. Remove loose cartridges and magazines and pack them apart so nothing shifts under the receiver.
Leave the orange alone
Do not tape over, paint or trim the muzzle marking to make the gun look sharper in a photo. The marking is the reason the parcel is lawful to send, and a handler who opens a damaged box should see at a glance that the contents are a toy.
