Build around the length
An airsoft rifle wants a rigid box a few inches longer than the gun on every axis. Suspend it in the middle of the padding so no hard part rests against a wall, and the outer box takes the knocks the gun would otherwise take.
An airsoft gun is not a firearm under federal law, so no license changes hands, but it is an imitation firearm, and the muzzle marking the government asks for is what keeps the parcel clean in transit. What follows is the marking the rule lists, where the private carriers stop, and why a gun-shaped description tends to stall the automated quote. Each rule below was read from its own source on 2026-08-08.
The blaze orange the muzzle carries is a legal requirement, not decoration. Keep it on the gun that leaves your hands.
Federal law puts airsoft in with toy and look-alike guns, and the point of the whole rule is that anyone looking at the thing can tell it is not real. The marking is the gun's, not the box's, so it belongs on the item before it ever goes near a shipping label.
The same guidance lists what an approved marking looks like, and there is more than one accepted form. A gun that is already sold in the United States usually carries one of them from the factory; the job at shipping time is to leave it in place.
| Accepted marking | What it means on the gun |
|---|---|
| Blaze orange muzzle plug | A solid blaze orange plug fixed permanently in the muzzle end of the barrel, set back no more than 6 mm from the end. |
| Blaze orange barrel band | A blaze orange marking around the whole barrel at the muzzle end, at least 6 mm deep, fixed so it cannot be slipped off. |
| See-through body | A gun made of transparent or translucent material, so the internal parts are visible. |
| Bright-color body | An exterior finished entirely in a bright color such as white, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink or purple. |
One carve-out is worth knowing. The guidance excludes traditional B-B, paint-ball and pellet-firing air guns from the marking requirement, which is why a metal pellet pistol and a spring airsoft pistol are not treated the same way. It does not follow that the excluded guns ship freely; it only means the orange-marking rule is aimed elsewhere.
A marked airsoft gun moves inside the country as an ordinary parcel. The wall goes up at the border, and the carrier that spells this out plainly is UPS.
Read that the way it is written. Nothing there blocks a domestic airsoft parcel, and the licensed-shipper contract that governs real firearm products is a separate program aimed at dealers and manufacturers. The practical takeaway is a split: keep the shipment inside the United States and it behaves like any long box; try to send it abroad and it needs a contract UPS does not hand to a private sender, on top of whatever the receiving country allows through its own door.
State and city law is the other layer, and it does not live on any carrier page. A handful of jurisdictions regulate the sale, transfer or age of buyers for imitation firearms more tightly than the federal marking rule does. Confirm the rule where the package is going before you print anything, rather than after the box is on a truck.
The parcel itself is unremarkable: a gun-length box, a few pounds, priced by its size and the distance more than by its weight. The description is what the automated screen reacts to.
On 2026-08-08 an airsoft rifle, an airsoft pistol and an airsoft sniper rifle were each entered into the calculator, and each came back with no instant rate. A phrase that reads like a gun is exactly the kind of input the screen holds rather than pricing on the spot, so no dollar figure appears on this page. That is a deliberate outcome, not a fault. If you need a firm number, describe the exact model and the two ZIP codes on the calculator to see what the screen returns for your item, and reach support if it stays held.

An electric gun ships with its pack, a gas gun ships empty of green gas or CO2 cartridges, and either way pick a ground service rather than air. Remove loose cartridges and magazines and pack them apart so nothing shifts under the receiver.
Do not tape over, paint or trim the muzzle marking to make the gun look sharper in a photo. The marking is the reason the parcel is lawful to send, and a handler who opens a damaged box should see at a glance that the contents are a toy.
Skip any wording on the outside of the box that advertises what is inside. A plain carton draws no attention on the belt, which is the whole idea.
Federal marking rules and carrier policies are revised without notice, and state and city law varies by address. Treat the lines above as what those sources published on the date shown, and check the rule that applies where your package is going.
Domestically, yes, as an ordinary parcel. An airsoft gun is an imitation firearm rather than a firearm, so no license changes hands, but the muzzle has to carry the blaze orange marking the federal rule lists. Check your state and city rules before sending one, because a few places add their own limits.
The federal marking rule covers airsoft guns that fire nonmetallic projectiles and lists a blaze orange muzzle plug or a blaze orange barrel band among the approved markings, read from CPSC guidance on 2026-08-08. Keep that marking intact on the gun you send; painting over it or removing it is what turns an ordinary parcel into a problem.
Not as an ordinary parcel. UPS states that replicas or simulated firearms are not accepted for shipment internationally except as a contractual service, read 2026-08-08, and many destination countries ban imitation firearms outright. Treat any cross-border move as its own project with the destination rules checked first.
It prices like any gun-length box, on size and zone rather than the few pounds it weighs. On 2026-08-08 our calculator returned no instant rate for a plain airsoft-gun description, so no figure is printed here. Enter your exact item and two ZIP codes on the calculator to see what the screen returns for your parcel.
