Turning on shipping for a Facebook Marketplace listing

Marketplace defaults every listing to local pickup. Shipping is a separate switch, it only shows up on certain categories and price bands, and Meta lets the seller decide who actually pays for it. This page works through eligibility, the toggle itself, and who covers the cost, with Meta's own wording checked 2026-08-22.

That is the one line Meta uses to describe what the shipping toggle unlocks.

Whether your listing can even offer it

Meta's eligibility page is direct: “Only certain types of items can be sold with shipping and checkout on Marketplace.” Checked 2026-08-22. Three gates decide it before the toggle even matters.

Eligibility rules for shipping and checkout on Facebook Marketplace, per Meta's help center. Read 2026-08-22.
GateWhat Meta states
PriceListing price between 5 USD and 500 USD, per Meta’s eligibility page
CategoryEligible: baby and kids, bags and luggage, physical books/movies/music, clothing and shoes, electronics and computers, health and beauty, jewelry and accessories, mobile phones, sports and outdoors, toys and games
Not eligible“Other types of items (example: furniture) aren't eligible for shipping and checkout right now.” Garage Sale is not a supported category, and Miscellaneous items are local-only for now

Meta also adds a blanket caveat worth taking seriously: “Some shipping features are not available to all eligible sellers.” A listing can clear every rule above and still show only local pickup, which is an account-level rollout rather than a mistake on your end.

The toggle itself

Meta's getting-started guide, checked 2026-08-22, gives the flow in one sentence: “Click Next, then click Set up shipping. Select Shipping, then enter the shipping details and follow the on-screen instructions to publish your listing.” Before your first sale, the same guide says to “set up your account to make sure you can get paid for your sales,” and every seller who turns shipping on agrees to Meta's seller performance policies.

If Set up shipping never appears while you are creating the listing, that traces back to the eligibility gates above, or to the per-seller rollout Meta does not fully explain. Checking the category and price against the table first saves a repeat trip through the listing form.

Who actually pays

Meta's shipping-costs page, checked 2026-08-22, puts the decision in the seller's hands: “When you sell something with shipping on Marketplace, you can determine who pays the shipping cost at listing setup,” with the charge falling to “the buyer, Facebook, or you as the seller.” Choosing to cover it yourself means the cost “will be deducted from your payout,” not billed separately later.

Picking seller-paid without pricing the box first is how a sale turns unprofitable. Weigh and measure the packed item, get a real number, and decide the shipping split with that number in hand rather than a guess.

Electronics and sports gear both clear Meta's eligible categories, and a lot of what sells there is heavier than it looks in a photo. On 2026-08-22 we handed the SMKlog calculator an electric pressure washer in its original box, sent from Berkeley Heights, NJ to Portland, OR. It estimated a 22 × 16 × 14 in box at 18 lb packed.

SMKlog live rates for the 22 × 16 × 14 in, 18 lb box described above, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922 to Portland, OR 97201, quoted 2026-08-22.

Every figure above is the complete checkout total for that box on that route, quoted 2026-08-22. UPS Ground led by a wide margin over the next-cheapest option, and cheapest and priciest were far enough apart to decide whether seller-paid shipping still leaves a margin.

Common questions

Can you ship items on Facebook Marketplace?

Yes, for listings that qualify. Meta's help center describes shipping as buying and selling “from people all over the continental United States, not just near your location,” as opposed to local pickup, which stays near your area. Checked 2026-08-22.

Does every Marketplace listing support shipping?

No. Meta limits shipping and checkout to certain categories and to a listing price between 5 USD and 500 USD, and states plainly that “some shipping features are not available to all eligible sellers.” Furniture, Garage Sale items and most Miscellaneous listings are named as not eligible for shipping right now. Checked 2026-08-22.

How do I turn on shipping when I create a listing?

Meta's own walkthrough puts it in three moves: “Click Next, then click Set up shipping. Select Shipping, then enter the shipping details and follow the on-screen instructions to publish your listing.” If the option never appears on your listing, Meta says you may not be eligible for it yet. Checked 2026-08-22.

Who pays for shipping on a Marketplace sale?

Whoever the seller picks at listing setup. Meta states “you can determine who pays the shipping cost at listing setup,” with the cost falling to the buyer, to the seller, or to Meta depending on the choice, and that a seller-paid amount is deducted from the payout. Checked 2026-08-22.

What does shipping actually cost on a bigger item?

Enough to plan for before you agree to cover it. On a real pressure washer we quoted live from Berkeley Heights, NJ to Portland, OR on 2026-08-22, five services ran from $54.70 to $92.59. Quote the packed box before choosing seller-paid shipping on anything that size.
