How to ship on Mercari, step by step

A Mercari sale sends the label to the seller's email in minutes, and Mercari expects the parcel to leave inside three business days. The workflow below covers the choices the seller actually makes: prepaid label or own, paper or QR, drop-off point, and the box sizes that fall off Mercari's prepaid ceiling. Mercari help pages read 2026-08-11.

The label lands in the seller's inbox; the three days to hand it off start the moment the buyer pays.

The clock starts at the sale, not at the label

Mercari's shipping page for sellers says: “Sellers are asked to ship items within 3 business days of purchase so the buyer can get their order on time.” Read on mercari.com 2026-08-11. That window covers the print, the pack and the drop-off, and Mercari counts it from purchase, not from label generation. A weekend sale is due Wednesday. Miss it and the buyer can cancel with a refund, no seller recourse.

Choose the label at listing time, not after

The seller decides at listing whether Mercari's prepaid label rides the sale or whether the seller ships on their own label. Mercari lists three positions:

Prepaid labels are only available on USPS, UPS and FedEx shipments that meet the weight and size limits Mercari publishes. The upper bound is “50 lbs in actual or dimensional weight,” the longest side is 34 in, and the second-longest side is 20 in. Anything above that goes on the seller's own label.

Paper or QR

Once a sale posts, Mercari emails a label and stores it under the order. The Order Status page lets the seller pick “8.5 × 11 inches — Best for inkjet and laser printers” or “4 × 6 inches — Best for thermal printers.” Read on mercari.com 2026-08-11. A thermal 4 × 6 sticker is faster and cheaper per label; the sheet label works from any inkjet.

For eligible USPS and UPS labels, Mercari also offers a QR code. From the shipping label article: “There's no need for a printer — just package your item and bring it with the QR code to a staffed USPS Post Office or The UPS Store. The carrier will scan the QR code and print the label for you.” Read 2026-08-11. FedEx prepaid labels on Mercari still need a printer.

Packing the specific parcel

Weigh on a real scale

A prepaid label bought on a bad weight will invoice back the difference from the seller's next payout. A kitchen scale gets to the nearest ounce; guess and pay for it later.

Use a box the buyer will not reject

Reused Amazon boxes are fine when the outside labels are covered. What is not fine is a soft-sided grocery bag or a torn liquor box — a Mercari damage claim starts with a photo of the outer packaging.

Fill the void, do not just close the flaps

Clothing squashes into anything, so protection is fine at low pad. Ceramics, electronics, sneakers and glass need real void fill on every side so nothing shifts during handling.

A typical Mercari clothing order — folded jeans and a hoodie in a 12 × 9 × 4 in box at 1.5 lb — quoted $12.83 to $17.35 through our own engine to Austin on 2026-08-11 across USPS Ground Advantage, UPS Ground and 2nd Day Air. Mercari's prepaid rate is a flat step off the same rate card at the weight tier that fits.

Drop-off, not pickup

Mercari does not offer scheduled pickup. USPS labels go into a blue collection box or through a Post Office counter (or Package Pickup ordered separately from usps.com); UPS labels drop at The UPS Store or a UPS Access Point; FedEx labels go to a FedEx Office or a Drop Box. The Order Status page shows the accepted drop-off options for the specific label after purchase.

First-Class Envelope labels for trading cards are a special case Mercari names on the shipping options page: “Envelopes must be no larger than 11½" long, 6⅛" high, and ¼" thick when not compressed,” and the ceiling is 3 oz. Read 2026-08-11.

Where these rules come from

Common questions

How long do I have to ship after a Mercari sale?

Three business days from purchase. Mercari's seller shipping guide sets that window; miss it and the buyer can cancel with a full refund.

Do I need a printer to ship on Mercari?

Not for eligible USPS and UPS labels — Mercari offers a QR code the counter scans and prints. FedEx prepaid labels still need a printer.

What is the weight ceiling on a Mercari prepaid label?

50 lb in actual or dimensional weight, longest side 34 in, second-longest 20 in. Above that the seller has to ship on their own label.

Can I use my own USPS account instead of Mercari's label?

Yes, listed as “ship on your own” at listing time. Enter the tracking number under Order Status once the label prints or the scan uploads.

Where do I drop the package off?

USPS labels: blue collection box, Post Office counter, or Package Pickup from usps.com. UPS labels: The UPS Store or an Access Point. FedEx labels: FedEx Office or a Drop Box.
