All four cartons left the same origin for the same Denver ZIP in the same capture, so nothing in the table below moves except the box. Both FedEx services quoted; other carriers quoted too but are left out of this table since the page is about FedEx specifically.

For reference, UPS Ground quoted the same four cartons on the same day at $96.17, $79.36, $100.39 and $35.68 respectively, undercutting FedEx Ground on all four and beating FedEx Ground Economy on all four as well. Sixty dollars for three inches, on Ground only
The second row is the one worth stopping on. A 47 × 15 × 12 in carton holds 8,460 cubic inches; the 50 × 14 × 12 in carton holds 8,400. The shorter box is fractionally larger by volume and it still quoted $104.65 on FedEx Ground against $165.07, a difference of just over sixty dollars, on identical contents, identical weight and an identical destination.
FedEx Ground Economy did not show the same swing: $104.40 for the 50-inch bag and $104.40 for the 47-inch one, unchanged to the cent. Whatever in FedEx's Ground pricing is reacting to the extra three inches of length is not reacting the same way on the Ground Economy tier. Measure the carton, not the driver
The longest club in a bag is usually the driver at 45 to 46 inches. A carton cut to 47 inches on the inside still swallows it with padding at both ends, and in this capture it was the cheaper of the two lengths tested on every FedEx service.
Adjustable hosels earn their keep
Pull the heads off the driver and fairway woods where the shaft unscrews, lay them beside the shafts, and the pack length drops to whatever the longest iron measures.
Weigh Ground Economy against the wait
Ground Economy undercut Ground on every carton here, sometimes by more than fifty dollars, but it ran one to two business days slower on the delivery window returned with each quote.
Trading the mileage for a nearer ZIP

Where a club box sits against the FedEx ceiling
None of the four cartons came close to the limits FedEx publishes for a domestic package. FedEx's Ground service page, read 2026-08-16, states a maximum of 150 lb, a maximum length of 108 in, and a combined length and girth of 165 in.
