Peak season shipping without the guesswork

Most peak-season advice is vibes. The parts that measurably change your cost and your delivery date are written down by the carriers: which days their networks stop, how a demand surcharge is structured, when a prearranged pickup has to be booked by, and what the faster tier prices at on your actual lane. This page sticks to those.

Ten moves that hold up under scrutiny

  1. Diary the closures before you diary the promotions. Both private networks publish dated 2026 calendars and USPS observes eleven holidays. Those dates are fixed inputs; your promotional cutoffs are not.
  2. Book prearranged pickups against the published cutoffs. UPS requires Air pickups arranged by 18 December for Christmas Eve collection and by 28 December for New Year's Eve.
  3. Stop upsizing boxes. The same 5 lb of contents cost $14.05 on UPS Ground in a 12 x 10 x 6 in box and $36.75 in a 24 x 18 x 14 in box on 2026-07-28, on the identical lane.
  4. Price the tier rather than trusting the name. On several lanes we quoted, a ground row and an air row returned the same window at very different prices.
  5. Read the window, not the service. Every window our rate set returns is stated in business days, so a weekend inside it is not transit time on most services.
  6. Treat modified-service days as pickup problems. The FedEx footnotes describe earlier on-call collection and drop box closures, not suspended delivery.
  7. Expect a per-package demand amount, and check its dates. Carriers apply these across named periods rather than to specific parcels, so a cheap label can still carry one.
  8. Keep a second carrier configured. Ground prices on a single lane frequently sit within a dollar of each other, which makes switching around a closure nearly costless.
  9. Buy labels early, print them when you ship. Postage bought on a closed day is fine; a label printed weeks before the parcel moves is a refund problem waiting to happen.
  10. Write the real window on the product page. A buyer told 8-9 business days who receives in seven is happy. The reverse costs you a claim.

How a demand surcharge is actually structured

The most recent UPS demand surcharge document readable on 2026-07-28 carries an update date of 28 August 2025 and sets out three consecutive periods. The amounts below are from that document and belong to that peak, not to this one.

Two lessons in that table. The shape is a low shoulder, a raised middle around the gift weeks, and a low tail into January. And the step between the shoulder and the middle is small in cents but real across a few thousand parcels. Nothing equivalent for the 2026 peak had been posted when we looked, and the FedEx 2026 surcharge and fee changes file lists handling, oversize, residential, delivery area and signature charges with no demand entry at all.

The most expensive habit in a busy month

Peak is when people grab whatever carton is nearest. This is what that costs. All three rows below hold exactly 5 lb, all three ran on 2026-07-28 from Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303, and the only variable is the size of the box.

The payload never changed, and the cheapest available price went up by $23.23. That is air being billed, and in a month when you are packing at speed it is the single easiest saving on this page. Cut the box down or step to a smaller one.

What is a demand surcharge and when does it apply?

It is a per-package amount carriers add during named date ranges. The most recent UPS demand surcharge document we could read on 2026-07-28 is dated 28 August 2025 and covers periods running from late September 2025 to 17 January 2026. UPS states in it that demand surcharges are subject to change and that periods may be extended or otherwise changed.

Have the 2026 peak surcharge dates been announced?

Not in anything we could read on 2026-07-28. The UPS document posted at that point still described the previous peak, and the FedEx 2026 surcharge and fee changes file lists handling, oversize, residential, delivery area and signature charges with no peak or demand entry. Treat the 2025 figures as a shape to plan against, not as this year's bill.

Does buying a faster service protect a delivery date?

It buys a shorter window, which is a different thing. On a 5 lb box from Newark to Chicago quoted 2026-07-28, UPS Ground came back at $14.05 with a 2-3 business day window against UPS 2nd Day Air at $21.96 with the same 2-3 business days. Paying more for an identical window on a short lane is the classic peak mistake.

What is the single highest-value peak habit?

Booking the handoff early. UPS requires prearranged Air pickups by Friday 18 December for Christmas Eve and by Monday 28 December for New Year's Eve, and FedEx runs modified Ground pickups on both of those dates. Missing a pickup cutoff costs a day that no service upgrade buys back.
