FedEx signature tiers, side by side

FedEx sells three signature levels on U.S. package services: indirect and direct both at $7.60 per package, and adult at $10. The tier that catches people out is indirect, which lets a neighbor or a building manager sign, or lets the recipient authorize release from a door tag with nobody present at all.

Three tiers, two prices, and one of them accepts a signature from someone who does not live at the address.

The anchor is a 12 x 10 x 6 in box at 5 lb, quoted 2026-07-28 from Newark, NJ 07102 to Dallas, TX 75201. FedEx Ground Economy came back at $16.22, the complete amount collected at checkout. The tiers below are the fees FedEx publishes, set against that rate.

TierFee per packageWho may signCeiling per shipment
Indirect Signature Required$7.60Someone at the delivery address, a neighbor or building manager at a neighboring address, or the recipient signing a FedEx door tag to release the package with nobody present$53.20
Direct Signature Required$7.60Someone at the delivery address only$53.20
Adult Signature Required$10.00Someone at least the age of majority in the destination country, with government photo identification required$70.00

Indirect is available to residential addresses only for United States and Canada destinations. That is the tier most sellers buy by accident and the one least likely to survive a dispute, because a neighbor's signature does not prove your buyer received anything. Direct costs exactly the same and stays at the address on the label.

Shipments to residential addresses may be released without obtaining a signature. If you require a signature for a residential shipment, select one of the Delivery Signature Options.FedEx Terms and Conditions, FedEx Service Guide 2026, fedex.com, fetched 2026-07-28

The $500 rule that pays for itself

FedEx applies Direct Signature Required automatically to packages moving to or within the United States and Canada with a declared value of $500 or more, and it does not charge the direct signature fee on those packages. So on a valuable shipment the sequence matters: declare the value first, then check whether you still need to buy a signature separately. Above $500 you already have one.

Hazardous materials are the other automatic case. FedEx makes signature release, driver release and indirect delivery unavailable on hazmat other than limited quantity, and requires the shipper to select the direct or adult tier. Those goods are on the SMKlog restricted list and do not move through our checkout.

Direct beats indirect at the same price

Both list at $7.60 per package. Only one of them keeps the package at the address you addressed it to, so there is no reason to choose indirect unless you actively want a neighbor to be able to take it in.

The per-shipment cap helps multi-box orders

Signature fees are charged per package, but FedEx caps the total at $53.20 per shipment for indirect and direct and $70 for adult. On a five-box order that ceiling is the difference between sensible and silly.

Check declared value before buying a tier

At $500 of declared value the direct signature arrives on its own with no fee attached. Buying it separately at that point is money spent twice for the same outcome.

FedEx signature questions

How much does FedEx signature required cost?

$7.60 per package for Indirect Signature Required and for Direct Signature Required, and $10 per package for Adult Signature Required, per the FedEx Service Guide 2026 fetched from fedex.com on 2026-07-28.

What is the difference between indirect and direct signature?

Indirect allows a neighbor or building manager to sign, or the recipient to release the package from a door tag with nobody present. Direct requires a signature from someone at the delivery address itself. Both cost $7.60.

Does FedEx need a signature by default?

No. FedEx states that shipments to residential addresses may be released without obtaining a signature, and that you must select one of the Delivery Signature Options if you need one.

Is a signature included above $500?

Yes. FedEx applies Direct Signature Required automatically to packages to or within the United States and Canada at $500 or more of declared value, and the direct signature fee is not charged on those packages.
